The Basics
Founded in 2014 in , by counselor Pat Ochoa and associates Kyle Carter and Sayeh Seyedfathi, Sustain Recovery Services offers outpatient substance abuse treatment in the Irvine, California area. Transitional living for young men, ages 18 and younger, and for male adults between the ages of 18 and 25 is also provided. Sustain Recovery Services keeps its numbers small, with a maximum of six clients in each house. Their mission is to provide a 12-step protocol, along with recovery coaching, thus helping young men gain a strong foothold in recovery.
Accommodations and Amenities
Sustain Recovery Services operates two transitional living houses—an adolescent house and a young adult house. The Tuscan-style adolescent house is located in Irvine and includes modern furnishings. The house includes a quiet study for students attending school and an outdoor fish pond. The young adult house is located in Anaheim Hills, and is located near Orange County’s beaches. In both houses, clients share luxurious double-occupancy rooms or singles, and each furnished room has a private bathroom and balcony. Private rooms are given to clients with seniority. Each house has amenities that include wireless Internet, Cable TV and transportation. House managers are on-site around the clock at each location.
The food is included in the cost. Residents collaborate with a nutritionist and prepare a weekly menu. Staff transports clients to the local supermarket, and assists them in purchasing items on a grocery list. In fully equipped kitchens, clients take turns preparing the meals and then dine together. Sustain Recovery Services believes this process emphasizes life skills such as proper nutrition, budgeting money, cooking and dining at regular intervals.
Rules and Regulations
At Sustain Recovery Services, prospective clients undergo a complete assessment to ensure that the facility is a proper fit. Sustain Recovery Services prefers clients who have undergone a minimum of 30 days of primary care at a drug rehab. A six-month commitment is required, and there are three phases in the program. The length of each phase varies per client’s progress.
During the first phase, clients are expected to perform community service, obtain a sponsor, learn the 12 steps and acclimate to a sober support network. During the second phase, they learn basic life skills, focus on career or academic goals, and complete the first five steps. Finally, the third phase involves going back to school or getting a job. Residents are also expected to complete their steps during this time.
Weekly requirements include attendance at 12-step meetings, performing household chores, being present at house meetings and attending individual, as well as group therapy. Each client meets with a CADC and a LCSW several times a week. Group sessions are conducted on a regular basis. Besides the vital skills taught during meal preparation, other life skills emphasized are resume building, chore prioritization, job searches, personal hygiene and time management. At Sustain Recovery, clients undergo random drug and alcohol testing. There is a zero tolerance policy for relapsed residents.
A typical weekday schedule includes waking up and performing personal hygiene from 7 to 8 am, community cooking, breakfast and chores from 8 to 9 am, morning meditation from 9 to 9:30 am, life skills from 10 to noon, community cooking, lunch and chores from noon to 1:30 pm, followed by a community outing from 1:30 to 4 pm. Step work is done between 4 and 5 pm, followed by community dinner, cooking and chores from 5 to 7 pm. Clients attend a 12-step meeting from 7 to 10 pm, followed by 10th step work and bed preparation from 10 to 10:30 pm. Finally, lights out is at 10:30 pm.
Besides Ochoa who is a CADC, staff includes Carter, a registered alcohol and drug counselor trainee, Seyedfathi, a Bachelor’s-level financial executive, a Master’s-level licensed MFT and a psychiatrist. While Sustain Recovery accepts insurance, the 30-day out of pocket cost is $6,500.
Extras
Additionally, young adult clients who have not completed their education or those who have never been to college receive educational guidance and support, and opportunities to pursue academic schooling. The adolescent program is licensed with the department of children and family services.
In Summary
Although Sustain Recovery Services is a fairly new facility, it appears to be on the right track with its program. For adolescent and young adult men who have recently left residential treatment, Sustain Recovery Services is a great place to build a strong foundation in recovery, build a peer support network and work on the steps.
