Bridge Youth and Family Services

The Basics

For 50 years, Bridge Youth and Family Services has provided the Palatine, Illinois community outpatient counseling and therapy services for children and adolescents. Bridge focuses on the social and emotional health of young people and families by providing comprehensive behavioral counseling and mentoring programs that stress substance abuse and mental health concerns to children of seven to 15 years old.

Services are available to all Palatine County residents regardless of their ability to pay. Bridge provides substance abuse education and family support to families with a loved one in treatment as well as referral services for individuals seeking treatment.

Treatment and Staff

The Bridge Substance Abuse Program is an intervention and education outreach service designed to assist schools and the community at large by identifying substance abuse within the community and helping to treat it. Bridge does not offer residential or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). Instead, the facility offers limited outpatient counseling for early-stage substance abuse with the goal of preventing further escalation. Palatine area high school and middle school students are eligible to participate.

Based on an initial assessment, individualized treatment plans are developed for each client. Bridge therapists suggest specific services from a range of in-school and in-office treatments. These services include child and family counseling in both Spanish and English for kids up to age 17 and their family members, as well as crisis intervention counseling for runaway and homeless youth in Palatine, Barrington, Elk Grove, Maine, Schaumburg and Hanover townships. Additionally, Bridge provides Prevention and Volunteer Services.

When substance abuse education is offered one-on-one or in group presentations at the two high schools, content is focused on improving family communication on a range of issues including low self-esteem, poor peer relationships, poor family relations and family histories where divorce has been systemic. Bridge staff members provide group and individual counseling services at Fremd and Palatine High Schools for those who have been caught with illegal substances.

Group counseling is available for students who seek assistance with substance abuse as well as for children of alcoholics who need help in addressing issues that could lead to their own substance abuse. Psychiatric consultation can be done on-site by a licensed psychiatrist when medication or hospitalization is required.

Bridge’s staff consists of Master’s-level counselors experienced in child and adolescent mental health and substance abuse preventive education and counseling. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-40.

Extras

Child and family counseling includes individual and group therapy for children, adolescents and their families, parent counseling and education, psychiatric and substance abuse assessments and community networking. Counseling is also available for trauma as well as to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Crisis intervention counseling services are geared towards non-substance abuse situations where a child or teen is a runaway or has left an unhealthy household where substance abuse or domestic violence is occurring. The Crisis Intervention team serves six townships in northwest suburban Cook County; Palatine, Schaumburg, Barrington, Elk Grove, Maine, and Hanover. Bridge also offers short-term counseling, referrals to emergency shelters and suicide assessments.

For adult and adolescent residential substance abuse programs, Bridge suggests contacting Rosecranz, Gateway, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois and Renz Addiction Counseling Center.

In Summary

Bridge Youth and Family Services reunifies families whenever possible using counseling methods that help children understand the harmful effects of substance abuse before it develops. Children and teens can also learn about substance abuse in their parents’ lives and in the lives of other adults around them. Though Bridge doesn’t offer intensive treatment programming, the facility does provide a range of early intervention services to educate the community about substance abuse.
