WestlakeThe Basics

Westlake Recovery prides itself on being the “most affordable upscale sober living in the nation.” Located in Austin, Texas, Westlake has three sober living houses—one for men and two for women—with almost 6,000 square feet each of prime amenities and luxuries.

Westlake clients can take advantage of living in structured and luxurious transitional housing with access to all that Austin has to offer, and included in the price of residence is a wealth of recovery-focused services including a personal recovery coach, spiritual guidance, an on-site chef and meetings both on and off the property.

Accommodations and Amenities

The accommodations at Westlake are top of the line and expansive. The two homes for women—one in north Austin and the other in south Austin—have six bedrooms each, providing luxurious living with enough space to house eight to 10 residents per house. Clients have the option of living in a private master suite with a California King bed and an en suite bathroom or a shared room with one or two roommates and full-sized beds—both of which have ample space for personal belongings. All bathrooms feature double sinks, whirlpool bathtubs and showers.

The modern kitchen has granite counter-tops, new appliances, an island that doubles as a breakfast bar and a pool table. There is also a coffee bar and an automated drink machine available 24/7 for self-service.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a community lounge with a marble fireplace, flat screen TV and lush seating that doubles as a meeting room. Clients can also enjoy luxuries like an office with two communal computers and Wi-Fi, a tanning bed, a large outdoor living space, a pool for lounging and swimming, a Jacuzzi, a fire pit and barbecue grill. A two-car garage is available for residential parking.

The men’s home offers four bedrooms, one master suite and three multi-resident suites with a capacity for eight to 10 residents. Bathrooms are attached and feature bathtubs, showers and double sinks. The house has an upstairs and downstairs kitchen with updated appliances. A living room with a spacious and comfortable seating area features a flat screen TV and plenty of space for socializing and house meetings. With amenities targeting male residents, Westlake provides a pool table, Foosball, paddle board, tennis and a trophy case for the home’s sober tag-football league trophies.

All residents are given complimentary memberships to a local high-end gym that has a basketball court, spin studio, climbing gym, indoor lap pool, Pilates studio and group fitness classes day and night. Near the women’s house there is also a yoga studio. Within close proximity to both homes are all the activities and culture that Austin has to offer; hiking trails, botanical gardens, prime golf courses, professional sports teams, live music and world-class restaurants are accessible year round.

Rules and Regulations

While Westlake could easily be mistaken for a vacation home, resort hotel or spa, residents are required to adhere to the facility’s rules and policies. Prior to admission, potential residents submit a background check to ensure they will be a proper fit for Westlake and the current residents. If accepted, signing a contract committing to 30 days to one year is required. Remaining sober for the entirety of the stay is also required and relapse will result in immediate eviction and forfeiture of costs.

Westlake expects residents to respect the house rules and fines ranging from $5-$50 are enforced for infraction—fine amounts depend upon the type of rule broken and must be paid within 24 hours. If a member of the house gets more than three verbal write ups or written notices and continues to disregard the staff, he or she will be immediately evicted with no costs refunded. Additionally, all clients must submit to regular toxicology screening tests, typically once per week. Failing to take a test will be considered a “no pass” and the resident will be evicted.

Although there is a housekeeping staff on property, residents are responsible for cleaning up after themselves and keeping their personal space tidy and belongings organized. A chef does prepare meals, but residents are also responsible for their own snacks and doing the dishes immediately for every meal. All residents are given household chores that they must complete daily for a week. Mandatory house meetings are held on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings at 8 pm. In addition, residents are expected to attend one-on-one meetings with a sober coach either Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday at 6:30 pm to discuss recovery goals and progress. Clients must also attend 90 12-step meetings in 90 days, after which meeting expectations are reduced to three per week. Finding a sponsor and working the steps is also required for each resident.

Curfew Sunday through Thursday is 10:30 pm and midnight on Friday and Saturday. If an exterior door is opened during this time, an alarm will sound and will result in a fine and consequences—including extra house chores. Overnight passes are allowed after 30 days of residence. Within the first 30 days, house members must acquire and maintain full-time jobs, volunteer hours or full-time enrollment in school. All residents must be off property from 10 am to 2 pm and must fill this time with productive activities.

Extras

Westlake is all about the extras. In addition to the aforementioned access to an upscale gym with personal training services, guided meditations using binaural beats, halotropic breathwork, aroma therapy and monthly complimentary massages through Aveda Beauty Academy—where residents are also able to acquire salon services—are offered.

Physical health is an important part of recovery and Westlake facilitates alternative practices like weekly yoga classes, Qi-Gong, art therapy, Aromatherapy, nutritional counseling, complimentary recovery literature, smoking cessation programs, EMDR therapy for residents with PTSD and spiritual guidance through 12-step workbooks.

In Summary

Westlake Recovery is the best of sober living environments—luxury that works in tandem with therapeutic practices to address the core nature of their alcoholism and addiction. Surrounded by upscale neighborhoods and with access to the cultural mecca of Austin, 12-step meetings, private gyms, yoga studios and a knowledgeable staff, Westlake is an excellent choice for those in recovery to transition from rehab to daily life. Living in luxury with enforced structure and support makes for a pretty solid equation for a prosperous recovery.
