The Basics
YWCA Enid’s Reflections Halfway House is a sober living program located in Enid, Oklahoma. Enid’s provides support and services to low-income pregnant women and mothers with dependent children who have recently completed drug and alcohol treatment.
The YWCA was originated in 1855 by Emma Robarts and Lady Mary Jane Kinnnaird in England as a movement to improve social and economic circumstances for women around the world. Over time, the organization has grown into the largest women’s group in the world and evolved to include domestic violence and substance abuse programs in 1972. Enid’s was opened in 1978 and is state-funded (free) to those in need. The facility was also completely renovated in 2005.
Accommodations and Regulations
Enid’s accommodates 10 women and their children in 10 private bedrooms. Each room is decorated simply and furnished with a bed and dresser. The kitchen, dining room, laundry room and bathroom facilities are shared. The bathroom is dorm-style with several shower and toilet stalls and lockers for personal items. Additionally, there is a children’s play room and a teen-room where older children are given space for homework and recreation.
The kitchen also provides each family with a locker for personal food items. Food stamps are provided through the program and residents buy their own groceries and cook their own meals. Soda and snacks are allowed, while smoking is only permitted off site.
Although personal computers are not permitted in the house, there is a common computer available and clients are allowed to keep their cell phones. Female visitors are permitted at the house any time before curfew, though male visitors are not permitted on site. Curfew is 8 pm on weekdays and 10 pm on weekends.
Rules and Regulations
Referrals are accepted from a variety of sources including treatment centers, the Department of Human Services, doctors and hospitals. All perspective clients must undergo a screening process to see if they are a good fit for the program.
Client stay varies depending upon an individual’s progress in recovery using their individualized treatment plan, but the center recommends no less than sixth months—allowing clients ample time to establish a solid foundation of sobriety. Residents are allowed to stay up to a year and are expected to remain clean and sober. Random and regular drug tests are given.
An average day at Enid’s begins at 7 am. All clients must be ready for the day at 8 am and engage in school, work, or volunteering. There is a mandatory nine hours of group counseling, two hours of individual therapy (both using CBT) and a minimum of two 12-step or Celebrate Recovery meetings per week. Scheduling varies from person to person, and is determined by each individual therapist.
The house is run by a house manager and two counselors are on staff from 8 am to 5 pm.
Extras
Additional support programs are offered to help expectant mothers and women with children improve their quality of life. These include parenting education, health service referrals, job training, life-skills training and transportation services to and from off-site meetings, employment, school and interviews.
In Summary
YWCA Enid’s Reflections Halfway House is a safe, state-funded and supportive facility that provides a wide range of assistance to women and their families. Each woman is given private accommodations for herself and her children. The rules and structure help each woman to establish self-sufficiency and the life-skills for living autonomously once she is ready to move on from the sober living community.
