The Basics
The Program, a drug treatment center in Florida that offers a variety of personalized programs and therapy options, also operates a network of five sober living homes for men and women in the West Palm Beach area. The residences for men are the Circle House, Salvage Yard, House of Principles and Way of Life Recovery. Enclave Sober Living for Women is also located in West Palm Beach. All of the houses use a 12-step model to teach residents how to live a sober lifestyle.
Accommodations and Amenities
Residences are separately maintained and have varying styles, layouts and accommodations. Circle House consists of eight apartments with four double-occupancy units. Principles, which is also an apartment complex, has a 35-bed capacity and two men share a unit. The Enclave houses 22 women, two to a room, and Way of Life accommodates 28 people.
Each house has a fully equipped kitchen so residents prepare meals for themselves as well as each other. (There are also outdoor grills for barbecues). Cable TV and free Internet access are also included.
The administrators of each house require residents to help clean, do chores and maintain their apartments in addition to doing their own laundry.
Rules and Regulations
Residents, who are required to have a sponsor, must participate in 90 AA/NA meetings in 90 days, and attendance is monitored. A missed or skipped meeting results in what’s called “reflection time,” during which they do a chore such as empty trash or clean the bathrooms for another resident who has a better track record.
Throughout their stay, residents are expected to be engaged in positive and productive activities such as work, looking for a job or going to school. As they master the 12 steps, each resident also learns how to deal with addiction as a disease.
During the first 30 days in residence, the curfew is 10:30 pm. After that, if progress is good, the curfew is 11:30 pm. All-night passes to stay with family members are also part of more advanced recovery.
Random drug testing is standard here and testing positive results is expulsion. An individual may be able to register at a different Program sober living house, but that entails starting from scratch. Other grounds for expulsion include fighting or sexual activity with another resident or a romantic partner on the premises.
Extras
The Program operates a little differently than other sober living programs in that it recognizes that even in sober living, some residents may still need outpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) treatment along with group or individual therapy. Through what’s called the “traditional track,” these residents can continue recovery at The Program’s treatment center while living more independently. Group and individual sessions are led by licensed therapists employed by The Program. There are also church-sponsored activities and sober living classes on the premises.
Additionally, house managers plan a number of recreational activities and outings for residents, such as trips to the beach, bowling and the movies. But the specifics aren’t divulged to residents until just before they get on the buses to ensure that no one calls a friend who may be using and try to meet them.
In Summary
At The Program’s sober living houses, residents are the beneficiaries of the services offered at the treatment center. Add to this a comfortable living arrangement, amenities and a 12-step foundation from which to build recovery, and one can see why the Program’s sober living houses are a good option for individuals living in the West Palm Beach area.
