The Stadter Center

The Basics

Located about 80 miles north of Fargo, The Stadter Center (TSC) in Grand Forks, North Dakota, has been offering inpatient treatment to men and women dealing with chemical dependency and mental illness since 2000. Founded by area psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Peterson, The Stadter Center is known for its strict atmosphere, structured program and an ability to provide intense psychiatric care to desperate cases in recovery. Children, adolescents and adults with a court-order to undergo substance abuse treatment are all welcome.

Accommodations and Food

The length of stay varies for each resident, but a typical stay is 28 days. The Stadter Center is a locked facility—meaning patients cannot come and go at will and visitors may only be seen with an appointment. TSC can accommodate 34 individuals with each client assigned a roommate in the hotel-like facility. The populations are divided by age group (children up to age 13, adolescents up to age 18 and adults 18 and over) and are separated behind locked doors.

Each client shares a double room with two single beds and a private bathroom. Television is not available residents and they are not permitted use of private electronics— including cell phones, iPods and other personal music devices, tablets or computers. Most clients spend their free evening hours reading or working out in the facility’s gym. Meals are catered from a nearby grocery store, and sugar is allowed, but not caffeine.

Treatment and Staff

Potential clients undergo an intensive assessment that includes psychological, psycho-social, occupational, clinical and medical components. Based on the findings, residents are given an individualized treatment plan.

TSC specializes in those suffering from co-occurring disorders such as bipolar disorder, anxiety and PTSD. Residents are housed in a “mixed-unit”meaning those suffering from chemical dependency and psychiatric disorders live and receive treatment together. Each weekday, clients attend group therapy from 9 am to 12 pm and again from 1 to 5 pm after a lunch break. The groups typically employ CBT and some components of the 12-steps. Group topics may include a broad range of topics such as coping skills, anger management, nutritional counseling and family issues.

TSC does not provide individual therapy counseling as part of treatment, but each client is assigned a social worker who follows their progress and visitor privileges are granted to outside therapists for clients who are already in therapy. There is a staff medical doctor on-site who assists with medication management and other staff include LCSWs, LADCs and Occupational Therapists. Clients who need aftercare are referred to nearby facilities.

In Summary

It should be noted that The Statder Center has had a few state and federal investigations in relation to supervision of clients with violent or suicidal tendencies and fire-code safety as well as an incident involving over-prescribing medications to adolescents. But it has been quick to remedy these situations by implementing a state-mandated “plan of correction,” as well as an internal risk management program created to assure all new policies are followed and are effective. In addiction, staff have undergone special training courses in an effort to improve quality of care.

For challenging clients (including those resistant to treatment and individuals with a history of relapse) the dedicated staff of therapists, doctors and counselors who specialize in treating severe cases of trauma and co-occurring disorders may be just the right fit.
