The Basics
Founded in 2009, Eudaimonia Recovery Homes accommodates 130 clients in gender-specific sober living facilities located in Houston and Austin, Texas. The word “eudaimonia” is ancient Greek for “happiness” and stems from Aristotle’s Ethics. According to Aristotle, people should strive for eudaimonia and work hard at living well, because it makes them more favorable in the eyes of the gods. Eudaimonia Recovery Homes advocates a 12-step approach to recovery in their homes, and also provides recovery support services. This community caters to men, women and offers specialized accommodations for gay and bisexual men.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Eudaimonia Recovery Homes organization operates seven houses in Houston and 12 locations in Austin. Presently, they are in the process of adding a sober living apartment complex. Clients reside in spacious homes that are located in quiet residential neighborhoods located near bus routes. The houses are simple yet tastefully furnished, and include fully equipped kitchens and dining rooms.
Clients live in double or triple-occupancy rooms, which are tastefully decorated with wood floors, white walls, twin beds and large windows providing ample light. As with many sober livings, clients are responsible for their own food and meal preparation. Amenities include fresh bed linens, dish soap, condiments, flat screen TV’s with Cable and Wi-Fi.
Rules and Regulations
Eudaimonia Recovery Homes accepts clients that have successfully graduated from an inpatient drug rehab, with a minimum of 30 days of abstinence from chemical substances. A nine-month length of stay is required, with the belief that the more time clients spend in a 12-step based sober living, the higher their chances for succeeding in long term recovery. At Eudaimonia Recovery Homes, recovery support services are included in the monthly fee.
Services include a three-phase addiction monitoring program (AMP). The AMP curriculum consists of 12 modules, including getting the ideal sponsor, setting goals, monthly budgeting, employment goals, resume building, needs versus wants, relationships, rebuilding family bonds, sober fun, finding a home group, being of service and finally, moving forward with a life in recovery. Clients work closely with an assigned life coach, who helps them work on their modules.
At Eudaimonia Recovery Homes, clients progress through three phases based on their progress. The first phase includes obtaining a sponsor, participating in AMP, being a good housemate, performing chores and attending four weekly 12-step meetings. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight Fridays and Saturdays. During the second phase, which is not time sensitive, but based on a client’s individualized progress, curfews are extended, over night passes are granted and clients sponsor other individuals in recovery. Phase three includes support employment volunteering (SEV) which encompasses service work, community involvement and employment.
Residents are subject to regular drug and alcohol drug screenings. The facility has a zero tolerance policy for those testing positive. Eudaimonia Recovery Homes works closely with several outpatient facilities, specifically Nova Recovery in Buda, Texas. Staff includes Joe Umberger, director of residential services and recovery coaches with counseling credentials including CADCs and several LCDC’s.
Extras
Clients requiring medication management for co-occurring disorders are referred to a local psychiatrist.
In Summary
Eudaimonia Recovery Homes offers a comfortable living environment and comprehensive care for clients in early recovery. For a very affordable price, residents are offered the opportunity to work closely with their recovery support coaches in a highly structured environment. With the added bonus of a house that caters specifically to gay men, this is unique sober living organization worth checking out.
