The Basics
Petersburg Mental Health Services (PMHS) is a community-based behavioral health organization offering outpatient treatment for substance abuse in Petersburg, Alaska. It was founded in 1993 and also offers outreach services in collaboration with hospitals, schools, churches, courts, police departments, the Petersburg Indian Association, Head Start, child protection and other social service agencies. PMHS serves 300 people each year, including persons with co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, each client goes through an assessment that may be court-ordered or self-requested. Treatment at PMHS includes traditional psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families, substance abuse prevention counseling, life skills classes, wellness activities, biofeedback and medical care. The program’s length can vary, as can each session, based on an individual’s needs. Group counseling can be arranged if requested by several clients, but it’s not normally a part of the program.
The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) program provides substance abuse treatment that is customized for residents of Petersburg. The program’s focus is community-based preventive education and is offered to those with co-occurring disorders. Counseling is on a one-to-one basis.
The PMHS Share Program is a community-based preventive care outreach initiative that educates the public about the harmful effects of substance use. Though on-site detox is not available, referrals can be made to qualified agencies. PMHS is not 12-step affiliated.
The staff at PMHS consists of licensed clinical social workers, certified drug counselors, behavioral health clinicians and behavioral health clinical associates. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-eight.
Extras
PMHS works with DUI and DWI offenders, offers a program targeting overall wellness and physical health and hosts events to promote awareness of substance abuse and other behavioral health issues.
