The BridgeThe Basics

The Bridge was founded in 1974 in Gadsden County, Alabama. It provides substance abuse and addiction prevention and rehabilitation for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 throughout northern Alabama. A variety of programs are offered, including all male inpatient treatment, male and female Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), outpatient and a variety of community-based initiatives. A leader in adolescent substance abuse treatment, Bridge has worked with the Alabama Department of Youth Services since the mid 1990’s. Outpatient programs are available in Cullman County, Fort Payne, Mobile County and Tuscaloosa.

Treatment and Staff

Boys and girls aged 12 to 18 can participate in the IOP or outpatient program at the addiction treatment centers in Cullman County, Mobile and Tuscaloosa. Men and women over 18 can be treated at the Fort Payne Center. All clients must meet an ASAM Level one or two for chemical dependency to be admitted into the program. Referrals can be made from all sources, and assessment may be completed in one of the four locations.

The treatment centers encompass all aspects of non-residential treatment, and work to treat the client’s lifestyle, behavioral, psychological and emotional issues. Bridge works closely with educational and courts systems to facilitate the needs of the client as they move through this life stage. Greater efforts have been made to accommodate those with co-occurring disorders, and Bridge offers resources to assist in dual diagnosis support and court ordered treatment.

Treatment consists of a blend of therapeutic modalities, including behavioral, CBT and Rogerian. Group therapy sessions focusing on anger management, coping strategies, stress management, communication skills, HIV education, goal setting and self-esteem are provided. Individual therapy is also available. Individualized treatment plans are created for each patient, and specific group topics are assigned to clients to deal with their particular needs. Additional topics include relapse prevention, recovery lifestyle, family issues and leisure. Peer-to-peer sharing groups are also available.

The adult IOP consists of morning or evening sessions offered seven days a week for nine to 12 weeks. The sessions are two and a half to three hours in length, and a minimum of nine hours of treatment is prescribed. For adolescents, the IOP program consists of at least six hours of treatment a week. This program is designed for clients that do not require the intensity of inpatient treatment, but need support in finding recovery. The outpatient program follows the same model, with fewer group therapy sessions scheduled.

Continuing care plans are delivered as part of the treatment model, and consist of less frequent group and individual therapy and individual case management. This level of care is applied until the client feels they are able to function fully without the threat of relapse.

Staff is shared across facilities, and includes several CSACs, therapists and case managers.

In Summary

The IOP and outpatient services at Bridge Inc. are an exceptional source of treatment for adolescents throughout Alabama. Offering a wide range of treatment modalities in individualized treatment plans means clients are able to find a level of care that works for them. As outpatient clients need less intensive care than inpatient ones, the flexibility of times and groups offered at a variety of locations are convenient and beneficial for clients and their parents. Integration with the community is a key part of treatment at Bridge Inc., and clients will not graduate from any program until both they and their case manager feel it is appropriate. Costs are minimal, with treatment included in initial enrollment for clients that have completed one of Bridge’s residential programs. For others, a one-time admission fee of $15 can be made, but no client will be refused treatment for inability to pay.
