The Basics
Since 1976, Sieda Community Action has offered services in 10 southern Iowa counties—Appanoose, Davis, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Van Buren, Wapello and Wayne. Services include child development, family support, housing stabilization and behavioral health. Behavioral health services consist of alcohol and drug treatment in conjunction with mental health assistance, which Sieda refers to as integrated AOD/MH. There is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and extended outpatient treatment for adults, adolescents and children. Sieda accepts Medicaid and private insurance that may cover most of the cost of treatment. As fees are based on family income, costs can vary for therapy sessions.
Treatment and Staff
The integrated AOD/MH path offers two programs: an IOP of nine or more hours per week and the extended outpatient, which offers less than nine hours. Incoming clients undergo an evaluation and are placed at the level that best suits their needs.
The IOP consists of four group therapy sessions per week, which all take place in the evenings at 5:30 pm and last an hour and 45 minutes. Extended outpatient consists of two group sessions per week. Sessions are available three times a day (morning, afternoon and night) and last 90 minutes each. Both tracks also require clients to have one-hour long individual session per week. Clients in both program may take advantage of co-occurring groups if they have a dual diagnosis, as well as a Seeking Safety group for those recovering from domestic abuse.
Sieda clients must undergo regular urinalysis and provide clean test results to remain in the program. Referrals are available for those in need of more intensive treatment. Aftercare at Sieda includes one group per week and one individual session per month at the same individualized rates per session as all AOD/MH services.
Extras
In addition to substance abuse treatment services, Sieda offers family drug court assistance, mental health counseling and an OWI class for those with traffic infractions due to substance abuse. The class is 12 hours long, takes place on weekends and is required by law for reinstatement of drivers’ privileges. Sieda also has counselors on staff who can treat clients with gambling addictions.
In Summary
With almost 40 years of experience, Sieda is a well-established organization in southern Iowa. It may not be the right resource for those in need of a more intensive treatment level than IOP. Still, for those in need of a flexible and affordable program with dual-diagnosis support, Sieda may well be worth considering.
