The Basics
The Malvern Institute opened its doors in 1948 to treat men and women suffering from substance abuse in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Institute’s residential program eventually settled in Malvern, in Chester County, and it then opened an additional residence in Willow Grove. The Institute has grown to include five outpatient treatment centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and it recently opened a dedicated residential program for women.
Malvern’s outpatient programs are provided at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient levels of care. Malvern’s outpatient programs offer dual-diagnosis support and guidance on using the 12-step framework.
Treatment and Staff
PHP clients attend treatment from 9am to 2pm Monday through Friday. Each day, clients have several treatment groups, including group therapy and psychoeducation classes on aspects of addiction. They also have individual therapy at least once a week. Clients with co-occurring disorders also meet with Malvern’s psychiatrists for medication management.
IOP clients can attend evening or daytime groups. In the IOP, group therapy meets for two-and-a-half hours three times a week and clients also have a weekly individual therapy appointment. The average duration of treatment on the PHP or IOP track is four weeks, depending on need and progress. Once clients have completed their IOP treatment plan, they can step-down Malvern’s General Outpatient groups, which meet for one-and-a-half hours once or twice a week.
The treatment team at Malvern includes LCSWs, LPCs and CADCs. Groups use CBT to help clients handle triggers and develop boundaries and coping skills. Groups also help clients use the 12-step framework; while clients are not required to attend 12-step meetings, they are strongly encouraged to do so several times each week.
Extras
The Malvern Institute also offers intervention services. For aftercare, it supports clients through its Alumni Association, which hosts several sober social events each month, and its Recovery-Oriented Community, a network of alumni and their families that offer each other emotional support and encouragement.
In Summary
The Malvern Institute has been helping residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey for over seventy years. Its five outpatient programs offer multiple levels of care as well as support for co-occurring disorders and using the 12-step framework. Malvern’s robust alumni network and higher levels of care enable it to support all of its clients and alumni at multiple stages of their recovery.
