The Basics
Since 1969, MHMR of Tarrant County has provided substance abuse, mental health and developmental disability services in Tarrant County, Texas. It is the second-largest community center in Texas, offering detox, residential and outpatient care for adults and adolescents. Treatment is located in the Fort Worth area, with both gender-specific and dual diagnosis care available. Using a mixture of talk therapy and 12-step support, clients learn how to live without drugs and alcohol.
Accommodations and Food
The Pine Street adult co-ed inpatient program houses up to 50 residents at a time. Clients live in dorm-style accommodations, sharing modest rooms with two twin beds and matching dressers. The Campus, an adolescent male program, is set up in a similar fashion with room for up to 15 residents. Both the adult and adolescent programs have on-site gyms. The adolescent campus also features the Fort Worth ISD School with computer-based learning for working toward a GED or high-school diploma. MHMR also has the 12-bed Billy Gregory Unit for detox, offering shared bedrooms and three meals per day.
In the residential programs, meals are eaten as a group in the dining hall, just a short walk away from clients’ rooms. Three meals a day are cooked on-site by the staff and served cafeteria-style, with an emphasis on nutrition. Both caffeine and cigarettes are allowed.
Treatment and Staff
MHMR’s programs use a mixture of the 12 steps and evidence-based therapies, focusing on relapse prevention and life skills. Before entering residential care, some clients may need to go through medically monitored detox. This period lasts three to five days, with a team of nurses to provide 24-hour medical observation and assessments. Medication to minimize withdrawal symptoms is available when necessary. Group counseling is offered, as long as clients are physically able to attend.
The Pine Street adult residential program is a short-term program, typically lasting for 30 days. Daily schedules include individual therapy with a licensed chemical dependency counselor, group therapy, on-site 12-step meetings and educational lectures on addiction. Group therapy is gender-specific, with topics including emotional processing, relapse prevention and family dynamics.
The Campus residential program is for adolescent males, ages 13 to 17. Typically, clients are referred from juvenile probation offices, truancy courts and school districts, though self-referred residents are also accepted. The average stay for treatment is 45 to 60 days during which clients participate in evidence-based groups covering anger management, brain power, relapse prevention and the 12 steps. Individual sessions occur once a week.
Residents in both programs also have a chance to heal with family members through group therapy sessions held once a week. They also have access to several on-site AA/NA meetings per week.
The outpatient treatment options are used as a step down from residential or for those who want a less intensive program. Services include specialized group therapy, individual therapy and life skills training. Groups are gender-specific and cover topics such as anger management and relapse prevention. Outpatient detox is also available, which may include Suboxone or acupuncture. The length of time spent in outpatient depends on individual needs.
The detox, residential and outpatient staff include nurses, psychiatrists and LADCs.
Extras
The adolescent residential program offers a ropes course and experiential therapy, art classes and Job Corps presentations. Additional services include tobacco cessation assistance and testing/support for HIV is available at both the residential and outpatient facilities.
