The Basics
Founded in 1973, WestCare is a nationwide non-profit with an enormous range of programs for adolescents and adults struggling with addiction, co-occurring disorders and other behavioral issues. In addition to its facilities in 17 states and two territories, WestCare California itself is quite broad in its behavioral health offerings. Both short and long-term residential treatment programs are available, and the organization also provides flexible outpatient plans for clients in Hanford, Bakersfield and Fresno.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, clients go through an initial intake and assessment to help determine their needs—as specialized programs are provided for adults and adolescents, programs can differ significantly. Though detox isn’t available on-site, referrals are available as necessary.
As mentioned, WestCare California offers different programs at its various locations. Both adolescent and adult programs are available in Fresno whereas Bakersfield only offers adult treatment. Hanford only provides programs for adolescents. Though the specifics of these programs differ, each relies on evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT in both individual and group therapy settings. The frequency of these meetings can vary significantly but all clients attend at least one group session a week and one individual session every two weeks (for less intensive programs). Others may attend therapy as frequently as three times a week for three hours at a time. The curriculum is 12-step based and includes support for co-occurring disorders with medication management.
The staff at WestCare California includes case managers, CADCs, LPCs, LCSWs, psychiatrists, RNs and Master’s-level therapists.
Extras
Each program includes case management to help address vocational skills or aid in obtaining further education. Other specialized programs include those offered through the Day Reporting Center, a facility in Fresno which provides outpatient care for adult parolees. Those who finish one of the above programs can also continue to one of WestCare’s discreet sober living homes throughout the state as a form of aftercare. A full list of all of WestCare’s programs can be viewed on its website.
In Summary
WestCare California is an expansive network with treatment offerings for adults and adolescents alike. Though programs can vary considerably depending on each client’s needs, each includes flexible treatment planning, 12-step support and a full range of case management services. WestCare California is overall a strong recovery resource for the communities it serves.
