The Basics
Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers were founded in 1983 by Dr. James Milam, author of the classic Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism, and Charles H. Kester, then head of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services for Seattle-King County. Milam and Kester created Lakeside to treat addiction according to two guiding principles: that addiction is a progressive and treatable disease, and that the education and support of the client’s family and friends is paramount to the success of long-term recovery.
Lakeside-Milam has grown into a network of nine outpatient centers in Washington state. It also operates an inpatient program in Kirkland and a transitional care facility for men near Issaquah.
Treatment and Staff
Lakeside-Milam has outpatient tracks for both adults and adolescents. Most clients enter treatment at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care. After an assessment, each client is provided a treatment plan that includes group therapy three to five days each week for five to eight weeks. Sessions are three hours long. During this phase, referred to as Phase One, clients usually have individual therapy every other week.
Upon completion of their IOP treatment plan, clients enter Phase Two, which consists of group therapy for one-and-a-half hours once each week, for up to 26 weeks. During Phase Two, individual therapy is scheduled as-needed. Many court-ordered clients then continue into a Phase Three, which incorporates monthly group therapy as well as urinalysis testing.
IOP sessions consist of processing groups and psychoeducation classes that address life skills and the disease of addiction. Processing groups use CBT and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) to help clients identify triggers and develop coping and decision-making skills. Throughout treatment, clients are also required to attend weekly 12-step meetings, at least two each week during Phase One and one each week during Phase Two.
Groups are run primarily by LCDCs. Lakeside-Milman does not specialize in dual diagnosis support; however, its medical director and staff psychiatrist consult on clients’ treatment plans and can make recommendations for further mental health treatment.
Extras
Lakeside-Kirkland outpatient clinics hold family groups each week, run by a case manager. The Tacoma, Renton and Kirkland locations also hold free intervention classes in which family and friends can learn how to effectively approach a loved one about seeking treatment.
Clients work with their counselors to create aftercare plans that may include additional peer support programs and individual therapy. Lakeside-Milman also hosts alumni events, such as its annual picnic.
In Summary
Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers operates a network of nine outpatient centers that provide multi-level outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents. Clients receive extensive education on the disease of addiction as well as therapy that enables them to make healthy choices in the present moment. With family groups and peer support requirements as well, Lakeside-Milam ensures that clients leave treatment with a stronger sober support network.
