The Basics
Providence Kodiak Island Counseling Center is a service of Providence Kodiak Medical Center in Alaska. The remote island, which is only accessible by ferryboat on the Alaska Marine Highway or airplane, is home to seven villages with a population of 7,000 consisting of Native Alaskans, Aleut Native Americans, Filipinos and Hispanics. The Counseling Center provides substance abuse treatment to this population, including Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and outpatient programs. Chemical dependency treatment takes place at the Safe Harbor facility.
Treatment and Staff
Adult clients are eligible for outpatient as well as IOP services; adolescents are eligible only for standard outpatient services. At intake and admission, clients are assessed and evaluated to determine the proper level of treatment. Case managers are assigned to clients at intake.
Clinical staff lead process groups, anger management groups and psycho-educational groups discussing drugs and alcohol. Intensive outpatient clients typically have individual therapy sessions once or twice a week and group therapy sessions are twice a week for three hours at a time. For regular outpatient clients, there is no set number of individual and group sessions per week. Safe Harbor staff are trained in Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT).
Clinical staff include Level II Substance Abuse Counselors and CDACs certified by the state of Alaska (or other state and/or national counselor certification agency equivalents), LCSWs and a board-certified psychiatrist. Counselors are clinically trained with a minimum of three years’ experience working with clients who have co-occurring disorders.
Extras
Continuing care is available to clients after IOP or outpatient treatment has been completed. As a part of continuing care, clients submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
The Alcohol and Drug Information School is an early-intervention program designed to educate students in public schools about the dangers of substance abuse. The Prime for Life program works in the Kodiak Island school district and the Alcohol Safety Action Program provides case management and court-ordered monitoring services to both adults and adolescent clients.
Transitional care and housing are available through agencies affiliated with Providence Kodiak Island Counseling Center.
In Summary
Providence Kodiak Island, part of one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems, provides accessible IOP and outpatient care to clients in one of the nation’s most remote areas. The programming is comprehensive and includes evidence-based therapy and the staff are trained to provide dual diagnosis support to clients.
