The Basics

Fire Mountain Programs operates a residential substance abuse treatment facility for adolescents 13 to 17 years old outside Denver in Estes Park, Colorado. Fire Mountain was established in 2004 by husband and wife team, Aaron and Chris Huey, as an after-school, weekend and summer camp experience. In 2010, the Hueys began to take teens struggling with addiction into their own home. From there, the idea for a residential treatment center was born.

Fire Mountain has now grown into a year-round, fully staffed therapeutic program. In addition to residential treatment for teens, Fire Mountain still offers kids camps, teen camps and family programming. Fire Mountain lovingly refers to those who have participated in the programs as the “Bear Tribe” which now numbers thousands of kids, teens and parents.

Accommodations and Food

In 2012, Fire Mountain began to operate out of a large facility set on 40 acres of land at the gates of the world famous Rocky Mountain National Park. Fire Mountain can accommodate up to 12 boys and 10 girls in its two gender-specific residences. Each house has been designed to feel like a comfortable home. All bedrooms feature twin beds and are shared dorm-style by at least two clients and all residents share the multiple bathrooms. There is no TV but computers and Internet are accessible for supervised use for educational purposes.

Nutritious meals are prepared by staff and served family-style.

Treatment and Staff

Fire Mountain’s residential program is typically five or six months, with a minimum stay of four months. Detox services are not offered. Clients receive an individualized treatment plan with a gender-specific approach based on their needs and age.

Treatment takes place in three phases and includes evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. Programming also offers dual diagnosis support, trauma-informed care, individual, group and family therapy. Depending on age and educational requirements, clients’ days rotate around individual, group and family sessions, tutoring and schooling and chores. Twelve-step recovery is not incorporated into treatment at this facility.

For every resident, 12 to 18 hours per week are dedicated to catching up, keeping up or getting ahead in school. Credit is offered for life skills, English, Physical Education, Outdoor Leadership, Art, Horticulture, Neuropsychology and Kitchen and Cooking Skills. Fire Mountain is partnered with Blueprint Education, a nationally accredited school that provides assessment criteria and transcripts for the residents.

The staff licenses include LCSWs, Masters in Education, case managers, CDACs, tutors and support and administrative staff.

Extras

Before completing treatment, clients receive an aftercare plan that can include boarding school, outpatient and day treatment programs. After the first two weeks, weekly visitation is permitted. Residents can have a 12-hour off-site pass during Phase Two. Later, residents can have overnights and up to a week home.

In addition to its treatment program, Fire Mountain offers kids Warrior Camps, the Leadership Training Intensive and the Teen Rite of Passage run every year.
