The Basics

Headquartered out of Midlothian, Virginia, Blackwater Outdoor Experiences is an innovative program designed to help young adults struggling with substance abuse, addiction and other behavioral issues. The organization’s main program is a 22-day wilderness expedition with rotating destinations depending on the season. Clients who attend during spring, summer and fall generally do tours of Virginia and West Virginia, whereas those who attend in winter may go to North Carolina, Florida, Alabama or Tennessee.

Accommodations and Food

Clients essentially carry their accommodations with them in their packs in the form of tents. They are expected to help staff members set up and break down camp every day. As far as food, clients carry that with them too and it primarily consists of lightweight and non-perishable items that they can cook around a campfire every night.

Treatment and Staff

Before being enrolled in the program, all potential clients must fill out an initial application which includes an addiction history and family information. The program accepts six clients per 22-day session. Expeditions are open to those between 14 and 18 years old as well as 18 to 29 years old. Blackwater Outdoor Experiences does not offer detox. While some dual diagnosis support may be available, those in need of medical supervision may need to seek out another program.

Treatment includes both individual and group therapy covering a range of topics including 12-step recovery concepts, psychoeducation, goal setting, coping skills, defense mechanisms and the merits of therapeutic journaling. While evidence-based therapy is utilized, specific modalities vary depending on the client and which therapists join them in the field. In addition to therapy, programs are also heavy on physical activities including canoeing, backpacking and rock-climbing.

The staff at Blackwater Outdoor Experiences consists of MDs, LCSWs, LPCs, field guides and additional Master’s-level therapists.

Extras

The expedition includes a 72-hour solo expedition to help clients find some introspective time to digest the lessons they’ve learned throughout therapy. The staff can also make aftercare arrangements for participants who complete the program.

Blackwater Outdoor Experiences is a unique and experiential take on addiction recovery. Treatment includes evidence-based care, 12-step integration and plenty of time in the outdoors and away from the distractions of modern life.
