The Basics
The Arbor Behavioral Healthcare provides a full continuum of substance abuse treatment, including a residential treatment, outpatient care and sober living, in and around Austin, Texas. Established in 2010, The Arbor’s outpatient division provides both Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and standard outpatient intensities. Outpatient clients have access to comprehensive dual diagnosis support and coordinated clinical oversight provided by the treatment team from its nearby 90-day residential program.
The Arbor was founded by Justin Harvey, a former Marine, and Jim Walker, who has 30 years experience as a recovery counselor. Walker is also a graduate of the Johnson Institute of Intervention. The Arbor’s Medical Director is Dr. Russell H. Carter, a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
Treatment and Staff
Most outpatient clients enter outpatient treatment at the IOP level. The IOP is eight weeks long and provides at least 10 hours of treatment each week. Clients attend group therapy for two and a half hours four days a week and have individual therapy once a week.
Once clients complete their IOP treatment plan, they may step down to standard outpatient, which includes 90 minutes of group therapy twice a week and individual therapy every other week. Most clients complete their standard outpatient treatment plan in eight weeks.
Therapy uses CBT and DBT and clients can have EMDR sessions to help process trauma. The Arbor requires clients to attend at least one AA/NA meeting each week. It also hosts one on-site each week for its alumni.
The treatment team at The Arbor includes LMFTs, LCDCs, and LPCs. Clients also have access to a psychiatrist for treatment for co-occurring disorders including medication management.
Extras
The Arbor’s IOP also has a strong experiential therapy component, with weekly sessions in art, music and/or equine therapy.
In addition to the alumni 12-step meeting, The Arbor hosts a monthly alumni meeting for recovery support and sober socializing. It also hosts a weekly family group for addiction support and education, which is also open to the public. The Arbor hosts family program weekends for its clients loved ones each month.
