The Basics
With a number of facilities throughout the country, Monte Nido is a broad behavioral health organization that provides treatment to clients struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring disorders. Founded in 1996 in Malibu, California, the company also has a residential treatment program for women based out of the affluent Westchester County community of Irvington, New York called Monte Nido River Towns.
Accommodations and Food
The Irvington location is an 11-acre secluded property north of Manhattan which looks like a country manor. The home has a total of 14 beds in spacious rooms shared between two to three residents each. All rooms have twin beds with fluffy comforters, dressers, storage space and soft, decorative carpets on the floors. Clients also get large bulletin boards above their beds that they are encouraged to decorate as they wish.
The facility also has expansive therapy rooms with modern furniture, a yoga and exercise room and an enormous kitchen. As food plays such an important role in recovery, clients often work with staff members to learn nutrition and cooking skills and to cook their own meals as they get progress through treatment.
Treatment and Staff
When they first begin treatment, residents go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs. While detox is not available on-site, those in need can get referrals to nearby facilities as necessary. Though each treatment plan may differ somewhat, each features full days of group and individual therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and Psychodynamic and Interpersonal Therapy. Those with dual diagnosis issues can also receive treatment whether that means support for substance addiction or trauma-informed care. Medication management is available as well. Clients can also participate in 12-step or SMART Recovery as they choose. Groups cover many topics including relapse prevention, body image and feminist issues. Weekly family therapy groups are also a part of the curriculum.
The staff at Monte Nido consists of RNs, LMFTs, psychiatrists, LCSWs, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS) and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.
Extras
Days are supplemented by a range of holistic and alternative therapies including art therapy, music therapy, psychodrama, nutritional counseling, yoga and exercise
The property itself also has some additional features including a historic tavern building which was originally built in 1687, a vegetable garden and a barn. Other flexible parts of the program include rotating off-site trips (sometimes to restaurants), jewelry making classes, dance classes, naturopathic medicine, equine therapy and additional modalities. Those in need of aftercare can also continue on to one of Monte Nido’s Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
In Summary
In all, Monte Nido Irvington is a well-rounded, serene environment for women 18 and up to recover from eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. Treatment programs are flexible and individualized with evidence-based care, life skills education and holistic approaches all incorporated to make for a unique and varied experience. Monte Nido Irvington is welcome haven for women ready to get help and begin the journey to recovery in a safe, supportive setting.
