The Basics
Novant Health is a network of medical centers, practitioners, clinics, surgery centers, rehab programs and community health outreach programs headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) focuses on substance abuse treatment and support groups for adults and their families. Also included in its range of behavioral health services are detox and medication-assisted treatment.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, clients are assessed and an individualized treatment plan is developed with a counselor. Clients requiring detox are referred to one of three Novant facilities where they begin Suboxone treatment as needed. Average length of stay in detox is three to five days and clients are exposed to group therapy to begin mental recovery. Upon discharge from detox, clients are either directed to the Novant outpatient track to continue their treatment or referred outside the Novant network.
Novant’s IOP schedules treatment during the day or the evening to accommodate work schedules and family obligations. Based on a 12-step model, clients are treated with an eclectic mix of therapies including CBT to address addiction. They attend daily group sessions that either focus on addiction-specific issues or overall mental health for a minimum of hours per week. Dual diagnosis support is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Individual therapy is conducted by a counselor or psychologist once per week. Clients work with their therapists to develop life skills, relapse prevention techniques and create an exit strategy from treatment.
Clients are required to attend both on- and off-site 12-step meetings. Once per week, an open meeting is held on the premises for clients and their families to attend. Novant refers clients to off-site SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery meetings that they can attend on their own time.
Novant staff includes a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, recreational therapists, LPCs, LPNs and CSWs to assist clients with their treatment experience.
Extras
Once per week, clients may choose to participate in the family program and aftercare groups. Families meet on weekends and participate in group sessions for support and addiction education. Aftercare groups are held in tandem with the family groups so families can continue to seek assistance after the client has been discharged.
Novant also offers art therapy with a staff recreational therapist. This alternative therapy method enables clients to process through creative expression.
In Summary
Novant Health is a vast network of medical and mental health resources based in North Carolina. With comprehensive detox services, IOP and aftercare, this program allows clients to take advantage of traditional therapy methods and the 12-step fellowship in a clinical setting. Clients facing addiction, substance abuse issues and dual diagnosis disorders progress through individualized treatment plans in preparation for reintegration with their families and community.
