VA Butler Center for Behavioral HealthThe Basics

Located in Butler, Pennsylvania, VA Butler Healthcare is owned and operated through the US Department of Veterans Affairs. It offers numerous outpatient treatment programs, in addition to an adjoining sober living option for homeless veterans and those attending addiction treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Programming begins with an initial assessment and screening. Those in need of detox can do so on-site through one of VA Butler Healthcare’s adjoining facilities. Because all programs are individualized, the intensity and frequency of treatment varies from client to client. All treatment includes both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based care including CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Group sessions cover a range of topics including addiction education, relapse prevention, coping skills, psychoeducation and trauma-informed care.

Aside from therapy, clients are also required to attend regular 12-step meetings. Dual diagnosis support including medication management is also available.

The staff at VA Butler Healthcare consists of doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, LCSWs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

As previously mentioned, anyone attending outpatient treatment has the option to reside in the affiliated sober housing. The facility has 56 beds for eligible male and female veterans, each spread out in a cluster of small townhouses. Each of the homes has differing floor plans though all include two to three bedrooms, some shared and some private. The accommodations’ bedrooms feature twin beds, dressers, closet space and basic decor. There are also shared living areas with TVs and kitchenettes in each unit. While the staff can help residents acquire food stamps and other benefits as necessary, those living in the homes are expected to cook their own meals.

In addition to the above, the facility also provides specialized programs for those struggling with PTSD and sexual abuse experienced during military service. Standalone mental health counseling services are available as well as are smoking cessation services. Those who complete primary care can also continue with therapy at a stepped down rate as aftercare.

In Summary

Overall, VA Butler Center for Behavioral Health is a well-rounded network offering support to low-income and homeless veterans. Lengths of stay in the sober living component are flexible and treatment includes evidence-based care, 12-step integration and dual diagnosis support. For down and out veterans in the area, the VA Butler Center for Behavioral Health is a strong resource.
