The Basics
Muskoka Recovery Center is a 45-90 day individualized program with one-on-one attention and dual diagnosis support. As a part of Addiction Canada, the country’s largest private treatment organization, the Muskoka location—about 165 miles north of Toronto—offers on-site detox, residential treatment and a 10-month aftercare program. Though the facility has scenic views of the lake, private suites and many amenities, Muskoka’s parent organization, along with CEO John Haines have recently been entangled with some considerable legal issues.
Accommodations and Food
With a massive lake just outside as well as acres of forest, Muskoka provides serene surroundings. Clients live in a 30-bed apartment-like setup, with two to a suite unless private rooms are arranged (for an additional $7,500 per month). Accommodations are quaint and rustic, each with a cabin-getaway ambiance. Suites come with cozy living areas, TVs and fireplaces for chilly nights. Cell phones and laptops are not allowed anywhere on the campus but clients can smoke outside whenever they feel like it.
Meals are eaten in the main facility, just a walk away from the suites. The resident chef takes special needs or requests into account. The menu includes items like grilled salmon, ribs, grilled veggies, tacos, salad and pasta. Caffeinated coffee is available during breakfast.
The facility at Muskoka has a lot to offer in terms of physical activity and recreation. Clients who wish to get outside can walk on one of the many trails surrounding the lake. An indoor pool is available for those who wish to swim while it’s snowing outside. For those who love to work out in a traditional manner, a modern, fully equipped gym is open in the mornings.
Treatment and Staff
An advantage of treatment at Muskoka is its three-to-one client-to-staff ratio. Staff consists of Master’s-level therapists, nurses, a psychiatrist, social workers and a medical doctor, many of whom are in recovery themselves. That said, several alleged medical professionals at another of Addiction Canada’s facilities were recently arrested for fraud for falsifying their credentials.
For residents who need medical monitoring as they go through withdrawal, on-site detox is available. Once a client has stabilized, they follow a busy schedule of group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, recreation and 12-step meetings. Evidence-based therapies such as motivational enhancement therapy (MET), CBT and DBT are used while groups cover relapse prevention, life skills, anger management, stages of change, human behavior and trauma. Each client is assigned a primary therapist whom they see twice a week to delve deeper into the underlying issues of addiction. On- and off-site 12-step meetings are offered on a daily basis, but clients are not required to get sponsors.
Relatives can visit on the weekends and family therapy sessions can be arranged on an individual basis. If the family decides to participate in the family program, they will receive a mixture of educational information about addiction, group therapy and one-on-one therapy with the client and primary therapist.
A 10-month aftercare program is provided to all residents who go through treatment at Muskoka. After clients are released, they can come back on a weekly basis for group therapy. Accountability and support is provided as a client re-enters the real world. Through the group work, residents can effectively complete their relapse prevention plans.
Extras
The Muskoka Recovery Center offers many holistic services for no additional charge including massage, personal training, acupuncture, Reiki, yoga and meditation.
In Summary
With many included services that usually cost extra and plenty of views of nature, Muskoka Recovery Center does have some draw. The one-on-one attention, small groups, rigorous schedules and complimentary aftercare can also help clients build a strong foundation of recovery. Still, Addiction Canada and its affiliated facilities have faced alarming allegations that are worth researching before making a decision about treatment.
