The Basics
The Christian-based nonprofit 2nd Chance Outreach offers substance abuse treatment in rural Kentucky. The facility is located in the small town of Campbellsville, which is about 90 minutes from Bowling Green. It provides a continuum of care that begins with non-narcotic detox and inpatient treatment. Outpatient services are a “Day Patient” program, which is essentially a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and basic outpatient treatment, both with an off-site sober living option.
Treatment and Staff
Outpatient treatment at 2nd Chance is individualized but the average duration is 30 to 45 days. The outpatient programs are open to those who have completed inpatient treatment at 2nd Chance or are transitioning from jail or another residential program. Treatment does not specifically address co-occurring mental health disorders, but clients with severe issues are offered referrals.
Day treatment clients attend therapy during the day five days a week for five hours a day at the main treatment facility. They return home or to their sober living house at the end of the day. This level of care provides structure and support while helping the client begin integrating back into daily life. This typically continues for about two weeks, then the client transitions to the outpatient level of care. Outpatient clients typically attend groups three or four evenings a week.
The programs include individual and group therapy that follows a CBT approach. All treatment is faith-based and incorporates a Christian-focused version of the 12 steps, with regular on-site meetings. Staff consists of Christian therapists who work with every client to provide support and guidance. There is also an emphasis on positive peer role models, with senior residents mentoring the newer ones.
Extras
The family program offered by 2nd Chance provides a family group each week that is open to loved ones in any program at the facility.
There are two sober living options offered by 2nd Chance Recovery. The gender-specific houses are only available to clients in the outpatient programs and have a combined 12 beds. Clients share bedrooms and bathrooms with at least one other person. Residents must purchase their own food and prepare their own meals.
In Summary
The outpatient program provided by 2nd Chance Outreach is a great option for those seeking additional support upon completion of the inpatient program. The combination of Biblical principles and evidence-based treatment may not appeal to everybody, but it does offer adult clients who are open to a faith-based approach a great foundation in recovery.
