The Basics
For over 15 years, Mississippi State Hospital’s Chemical Dependency Unit (CDU) has been providing detox and residential treatment to women ages 18 and up. MSH is in Whitfield, 15 miles southeast of Jackson. The CDU previously treated men until state budget cuts forced the hospital to limit its inpatient care to women only.
Accommodations and Food
The Chemical Dependency Unit is located on the 350-acre hospital campus, which includes a number of colonial brick buildings dating back to the hospital’s founding in the 1930s. The campus includes several ponds and gardens, providing a scenic and tranquil atmosphere for its residents in recovery.
Clients are housed dormitory-style, usually three to four to a room, and have shared bathrooms. The CDU has multiple common areas with TVs and supplies for recreational therapy, such as crafting and art therapy. Clients can watch limited TV each night after treatment hours, and the facility has a supply of DVDs for clients to watch on the weekends. Computers and cell phones aren’t permitted in treatment, but clients can use the unit phones to call home each week. The unit also has free laundry facilities that residents can use each week.
Clients who are medically stable take their meals in the full-service hospital cafeteria; those in the early stages of detox can have their meals delivered to the CDU.
Treatment and Staff
Detox usually lasts two to 10 days and then clients enter the residential program. Most treatment plans last 35 to 45 days in total. Clients attend group therapy each morning and have a variety of psychoeducation classes and individual therapy throughout the rest of the day. Treatment uses CBT, DBT and trauma-informed care to help clients develop self-awareness and coping skills. Clients are also encouraged to attend daily 12-step meetings held on the hospital’s grounds.
The treatment team includes MFTs, addiction counselors, case managers, MSWs and psychiatrists and nurse practitioners for those in need of dual diagnosis support. MSH is one of the state’s oldest psychiatric facilities and is equipped to treat severe co-occurring disorders.
Extras
The CDU has an unusually robust schedule of educational classes for a state-run facility. Topics include parenting skills, health education, meditation and life skills such as budgeting. Clients also have art and music therapy and yoga and fitness classes.
Families are permitted one weekend visit with clients during their stay and are required to attend a family education group immediately before the visit. The hospital’s case managers work with clients’ social workers (many of whom referred them to treatment) to make sure clients have access to stable housing and outpatient care upon discharge.
In Summary
Mississippi State Hospital’s Chemical Dependency Unit offers medically-supervised residential treatment that incorporates extensive therapy, life skills classes and health education. Its treatment team works with clients and their social workers to make sure they have the access to services they need to flourish in recovery once they complete their residential treatment plan.
