Spring to LifeThe Basics

Spring To Life was founded by Pastor Erik Hines in 2006. Located in Woodbury, Tennessee, Spring to Life is a Christian discipleship that provides long-term residential treatment for men in a wooded enclave 50 miles southeast of Nashville. Clients commit to a minimum of 30 days to begin their stay, but most remain for three to four months. Many Spring To Life graduates continue treatment at Hope House, an affiliated sober living residence 30 miles away.

Spring To Life joined Addiction Campuses, a national network of long-term treatment facilities, in 2014. When Addiction Campuses audited Spring To Life’s recent graduates, it discovered that 84% of its alumni had remained sober throughout their first year after leaving treatment.

Accommodations and Food

Spring To Life’s residents live in a well-appointed lodge that sits on 10 scenic acres. The grounds feature ample hiking trails and streams. The facility has 18 beds, and men sleep in bunk beds, dormitory-style. Groceries are provided by the facility, but men are responsible for preparing their own meals.

Treatment and Staff

Clients should arrive at Spring To Life abstinent. Those in need of detox are referred to a nearby hospital accustomed to providing detox services to its clients.

Treatment at Spring To Life is provided through pastor-facilitated faith-based classes on living according to Christian principles. Pastor Hines has created the GEAR Methodology, which teaches addictive behavior modification and self-reflection through Christian teachings. Clients also receive on-going peer recovery coaching.

Residents rise at 7 am and have a devotional meeting at 8am. From 8:15 to 9 am they do chores, and from 9 to 11 am they attend a GEARS class. Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons they’re transported to a nearby gym for swimming, basketball and other athletic activities, and then return to the facility for an additional faith-based GEARS group from 5 to 7 pm. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons they have a check-in group to process issues in the house or personal issues that are coming up as they progress in recovery. Clients also have individual recovery coaching sessions at least once a week.

In addition to Pastor Hines, the residence has two ordained pastoral counselors on-site each weekday to conduct groups and see clients individually. There are also three peer recovery coaches (who are graduates of Spring To Life) on-site at all times for on-going recovery coaching and 24/7 supervision and emotional support.

If it becomes apparent that clients need additional counseling or medication management for dual diagnosis support or medical care, the staff will transport them into town for appointments at medical and mental health clinics.

Extras

On Thursday evenings, residents attend a local service that features motivational sermons and music. Residents are also taken on recreational trips such as paint-ball and canoeing excursions each month.

Clients can use the house phones to call home three times a week and families can visit on Sundays from 1 to 4 pm. For aftercare, recovery coaches work closely with each client to create their Strategic Life Plan, which may include peer support meetings, such as 12-step or Celebrate Recovery, educational and vocational goals and sober recreational activities.

In Summary

For over a decade, Spring To Life has been providing men faith-based residential treatment in a rustic setting designed to encourage cooperation and self-reliance. Its GEARS treatment curriculum was developed to help clients use the Bible and other Christian teachings to motivate their commitment to a productive life in recovery. Spring To Life’s recovery coaches ensure that clients leave treatment with a Strategic Life Plan, a road map to continuing their commitment to sobriety supported by faith and service.
