Changes Outpatient Wellness CenterThe Basics

Changes Outpatient Wellness Center opened its doors in 2015 to provide comprehensive outpatient care focused on the needs of men and women who’ve recently completed residential treatment. Clients enroll in either the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and step down as they progress in recovery.

Changes was co-founded by Jeffrey Clark and substance abuse treatment veteran William Oswald, who was instrumental in the creation of Cocaine Anonymous. Changes has an experienced multi-disciplinary treatment team that offers experiential therapy, including neurofeedback and EMDR, as well as conventional modalities and exposure to the 12-step framework.

Treatment and Staff

Changes is located a few blocks from Santa Barbara’s main drag, State Street, in a well-appointed facility decorated to provide a warm and home-like atmosphere.

Clients entering treatment at the PHP level attend group and individual therapy from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday. IOP clients can attend treatment from 9 am to 12 pm or 12 to 3 pm, three to five days a week. As clients step down into standard outpatient, they usually attend group therapy twice a week. All clients have individual therapy at least once a week and most clients complete their treatment plans in 10 to 12 weeks.

CBT and DBT are utilized to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers. Clients recovering from trauma can schedule EMDR treatment with the Clinical Director, Kathryn Lepage. Groups, which seldom exceed 10 clients, also implement music and art therapy, yoga and mindfulness.

All clients are also encouraged to attend peer support meetings while in treatment. The treatment team helps them locate 12-step, SMART Recovery and Refuge Recovery meetings according to their needs and preferences.

The treatment team includes psychologists, LMFTs and a psychiatrist. A unique feature of Changes’ programs is that all clients have a weekly consultation with the psychiatrist to make a holistic plan to avoid depression and anxiety as they progress in recovery. Clients with mental health diagnoses can also receive medication management and additional therapy for dual diagnosis support.

Extras

Clients are encouraged to bring loved ones to family counseling. Changes offers a weekly relapse prevention group for clients who’ve completed their outpatient treatment plan and it works with clients to create aftercare plans that may include on-going individual therapy and peer support.

In Summary

Changes Outpatient Wellness Center has created a comprehensive outpatient program that allows clients to taper from intensive day treatment to continuing care. By creating customized treatment plans that use cognitive therapy, mindfulness, art and music therapy, as well as EMDR, clients are able to explore their addiction and behavior from multiple angles and choose which approaches yield the most promising results.
