Sumter South CarolinaThe Basics

For nearly 40 years, Sumter Behavioral Health Services (SBHS) has specialized in the prevention, intervention and treatment of substance abuse problems. With the help of advisory groups, inter-agency councils and surveys, SBHS aims to identify the needs of the community of Sumter, South Carolina and to create programs that address those needs. With a focus on substance abuse disorders, non-acute mental health disorders and behavioral health issues, SBHS treats adolescents, their families and adults. Additional resources are available for those suffering from depression, PTSD and anxiety.

Treatment and Staff

While SBHS has several locations throughout the Sumter area, substance abuse outpatient treatment takes place primarily at the Main St. facility. There are a number of programs available including basic outpatient, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), residential facilities and halfway houses.

Both outpatient tracks use evidence-based methods including CBT during individual and group therapy. Additionally, clients can support their recovery with family and couples therapy, relapse prevention, educational classes and gender-specific groups for both women and men. Co-ed groups are scheduled three times a week in the evenings. Detox is not available in IOP but takes place at The Freedom House, a six-bed detox facility that houses clients for three to five days.

Dual diagnosis support with psychiatrists is available for those dealing with serious mental illness or significant emotional disorders. A compassionate staff of professional Licensed Addiction Counselors (LACs) lead therapy sessions. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-five.

Extras

Hearing impaired services and drug screenings are offered when necessary. In addition to IOP, SBHS also offers programs for women who are victims of domestic violence as well as programs for gambling and smoking.

Additional services include HIV/AIDS education, adolescent services, anger management, assistance for those with legal problems and ADSAP—a program for individuals convicted of driving under the influence.

In an effort to include loved ones in the recovery process, clients can enroll in the Intensive Family Services program which is intended to assist, support and keep families together. SBHS also has extensive referral services to help meet the needs of clients that are beyond the staff’s level of training.

In Summary

SBHS is a non-profit community heath center that treats a wide range of behavioral health problems, especially alcohol and drug abuse. Since addiction involves multiple areas of one’s life, SBHS has numerous programs that can help clients address and recovery on all levels. In order to reach the community at large, a sliding scale fee payment is offered for those who don’t have Medicaid, private insurance or the amount of money necessary to pay full price.
