Monroe GeorgiaThe Basics

Twin Lakes Recovery Center opened its doors last year to provide state-of-the art detox, residential and outpatient treatment near Atlanta, Georgia. Though a new addition to Atlanta’s recovery community, Twin Lakes’ clinical and executive leadership has decades of experience in health care administration and the treatment of co-occurring disorders. Twin Lakes residential campus is located on 35 scenic acres in Monroe, Georgia, and its outpatient center is located in Gainesville.

Twin Lakes takes a holistic approach to residential treatment, incorporating evidence-based therapy, the 12-step framework and mindfulness training. While it encourages clients to work the 12 steps, Twin Lakes prides itself on accommodating clients of different belief systems and can support those who wish to find other frameworks for peer support.

Accommodations and Food

Twin Lakes’ verdant campus provides residents with ample outdoor space for recreational walks and sporting activities. Clients reside in and attend treatment activities in the 17,000-square foot newly-renovated home on campus, which features an upscale traditional décor. Clients have roommates and shared baths. The residence has common areas for TV, reading and games and a gym with exercise equipment. While electronics and cell phones are not permitted, clients can use the office phones in the treatment areas to call home.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are catered each day, and coffee and snacks are available throughout the day in the kitchen. Dietary restrictions and preferences can be accommodated by the catering staff.

Treatment and Staff

Residential treatment plans are from 28 to 45 days. Clients in need of detox (typically a three- to seven-day process) do so on-site. Clients can begin attending 12-step meetings and treatment groups as they stabilize.

Residents attend group therapy each morning and afternoon and have individual therapy at least once a week. Treatment groups use trauma-informed care, CBT, DBT and the 12-step framework to help clients address anger management, boundaries and triggers. Clients also attend psychoeducation groups on mindfulness and the disease model of addiction. There are daily 12-step meetings on campus, but SMART Recovery meetings can also be located.

The treatment team includes a psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, LPCs, a dietitian and substance abuse technicians who provide 24-hour support. Treatment groups have fewer than 15 participants, and comprehensive dual diagnosis support including medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Extras

Each month, Twin Lakes hosts a family weekend for loved ones to attend recovery education and support groups. For aftercare, many clients attend Twin Lakes’ outpatient program in Gainesville. For clients who do not reside in the area, the treatment team helps them locate counseling or outpatient programs near their home. For a year after graduation, the treatment team makes monthly check-in calls to see how clients are progressing.

In Summary

Twin Lakes Recovery Center provides residential treatment in a well-appointed domestic setting that allows clients to reevaluate their choices and behavior away from the triggers and challenges of their home environment. The treatment team hopes to give each client an experience of acceptance and hope as they improve their physical and mental health and understanding of what has made them vulnerable to addiction.
