The Basics
The Psychological Center, Inc.’s Pegasus House is a gender-specific residential treatment program for young women between the ages of 18 and 25. Since 1985, this Lawrence, Massachusetts based facility has provided evidence-based group and individual therapy, 12-step support and help with co-occurring disorders including medication management.
Accommodations and Food
The two-story Victorian house has 15 beds and four bathrooms. Bedrooms are shared with up to two other clients. Each gets their own dresser and but closet space and desks are shared. There are also two large living rooms, one with a a flat screen TV, and meetings rooms. The well-lit home is filled with big couches and chairs, decorated simply with client artwork.
Clients maintain the home through a revolving chore list that includes cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking. Pegasus House provides ingredients and clients trade off preparing meals for each other served family-style in a kitchen and shared dining space. There are also healthy snacks offered throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
The program through Pegasus House is highly structured and organized, providing a schedule that includes daily chores along with group therapy, education and volunteering. The group therapy schedule is staggered throughout the day, as some of the clients leave for job training or school and return in the evening. The program is individualized and can include medication management and monitoring, relapse prevention and daily coping skills training. The treatment approach includes 12-step principles, CBT and trauma-informed care. Individual sessions are usually once a week but can be increased in frequency if needed.
Length of treatment ranges but on average is six months. During this time, clients receive medical services and psychological evaluations and support. Residents also have ample opportunities for higher education and the staff can help facilitate GED courses or college classes.
The staff of this facility includes many graduates of the program who are now counselors, 24-hour support staff, LCSWs and addiction specialists.
Extras
During their stay at the Pegasus House, the clients work on designing an aftercare plan that may incorporate vocational placement or transitional housing.
There is a family program that includes counseling and education. Family involvement is considered key in the client finding healthy boundaries and learning how to make better choices.
