The Basics
Founded in 1993, The The Transition House is an expansive non-profit with affordable addiction treatment options for low-income and homeless adults throughout Florida. With locations in St. Cloud, Tarpon Springs, Kissimmee, Jacksonville and Bartow, the organization provides a wide range of residential treatment options for those struggling with addiction, co-occurring disorders, chronic homelessness and criminal re-entry.
Accommodations and Food
Across its many facilities, Transition House offers more than 559 beds for men and women. Though the specific accommodations may vary, housing includes both residential homes and small apartments. Bedrooms feature full beds, dressers and shared closet space, while shared living spaces include bathrooms and kitchens/kitchenettes. Clients of the residential treatment program receive three meals a day; however, those in the DOC re-entry programs are expected to prepare their own food.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, clients go through an initial assessment process so that staff members can develop their individualized treatment plans. While detox services are not offered, referrals are available upon request. Though programs vary, each include individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices, such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Support for co-occurring disorders is provided, as is trauma-informed care. Groups cover a range of topics including vocational skills, life and coping skills, addiction education, art therapy, relapse prevention and mindfulness. Each of these programs have variable lengths of stay.
The staff at The Transitional House consists of LMHCs, CADCs, LADCs, LCSWs, case managers and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
In addition to the above, The Transition House also provides outpatient services as well as standalone substance abuse assessments. Those who finish a primary care program can also continue to outpatient care as a step down option. Finally, the organization can help its alums find permanent housing as well.
In Summary
Overall, The Transition House is a very broad organization with programs for court-ordered and self-referred clients alike. Treatment includes evidence-based care, 12-step integration, dual diagnosis support and a range of life skills classes as well. For those in the area seeking an affordable and long-term program, The Transition House is a strong resource worth considering.
