The Basics

Located in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, Teen Challenge of Western Pennsylvania is a Christian-based organization that provides addiction treatment for teens and adults. The facility is owned and operated by the nationwide Teen Challenge organization, and provides long-term residential tracks lasting for 14 months.

Accommodations and Food

The rural facility sits on 18 acres in a restored former military base. Residents live in shared rooms with bunk beds, dressers and shared closet space. Other features include an on-site chapel, plenty of outdoor space and a large cafeteria. Throughout their stay, clients are served three square meals a day though they may also be required to cook in the kitchen as part of their rotating chores.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients go through an initial intake to help the staff determine their needs. Those in need of detox need to complete this process before beginning treatment at the facility. As the treatment facilitated through Teen Challenge is not clinical, it does not offer medical or psychiatric support and isn’t rooted in evidence-based practices.

Clients go through treatment in phases, each of which focuses on a different aspect of spirituality and personal discipline. Both group and individual therapy with life coaches and pastors are available, all focused on Biblical teachings and the deeper issues involving each client’s respective issues with addiction. Dual diagnosis support is not available and 12-step participation is not required as part of the program.

The staff at Teen Challenge Western Pennsylvania consists of program alumni, volunteers, life coaches and spiritual counselors without official addiction-related credentials.

Extras

Aside from the above, the organization also offers additional programs after clients finish treatment where they intern with the organization to become employees themselves. The organization also does regular outreach and charity work in the local community.
