The Basics

Turning Point Center for Youth and Family Development is a non-profit behavioral health and substance abuse treatment program that treats adolescents 12 to 21 years old in Fort Collins, Colorado. Celebrating its 50^th Anniversary, Turning Point serves over 2,000 children and families every year with a wide range of services that include outpatient, day treatment, academic programs and residential treatment. Its residences are close to businesses, transportation, Colorado State University and Fort Range Community College. Turning Point is accredited by CARF and an affiliate of the Realities For Children Agency.

Accommodations and Food

Turning Point can accommodate up to 20 boys and 14 girls in its two gender-specific residences. Each residence has been designed to feel like a comfortable home away from home with ample living and outside recreational space. All bedrooms are shared by at least two clients and all residents share the multiple bathrooms. There is no TV but computers and Internet are accessible for supervised use for educational purposes. Cell phones and personal electronic devices are not permitted but a facility phone is available for clients to use.

Nutritionist designed meals are prepared by staff and served home-style. Sugar and caffeine are not permitted.

Treatment and Staff

Turning Point’s residential program is generally four to five months. Its short-term RECLAIM program for clients who have suffered a relapse is 30 to 60 days in length. Treatment includes evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. Programming also offers dual diagnosis support, the Pathways to Self-Discovery and Change course, positive behavior support, trauma-informed care, individual, group, family and milieu therapy. Milieu therapy is designed for clients to receive feedback about their behavior in daily living from other clients and staff and considered to be the cornerstone of the residential treatment program. Depending on age and educational requirements, clients’ days rotate around individual, group and family sessions, tutoring and schooling and chores.

Detox services and 12-step are not offered by Turning Point. Clients receive an individualized treatment plan with a gender-specific approach based on their needs and age. Generally clients receive one weekly individual and family session and three group sessions per week.

Both residences are staffed 24/7 by gender-specific staff trained to treat and supervise “Staff Secure” youth populations. Staff licenses include LCSWs, Masters in Education, case managers, CDACs, tutors and support and administrative staff. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-one.

Extras

Clients also participate in community and volunteering projects. Weekly visitation is permitted and clients may see family members regularly for family counseling sessions.

Before completing treatment, clients receive an aftercare plan that can include Turning Point’s outpatient and day treatment programs. In addition to its treatment programs, Turning Point offers drug testing and DUI classes. Each year, Turning Point holds three fundraisers including a golf tournament and seasonal festivals.
