The Basics
Founded in 1969 in Corpus Christi, Texas, South Texas Substance Abuse Recovery Services, Inc. d/b/a STSARS is a non-profit organization that provides a variety of outpatient substance abuse recovery services. Programs include Substance Abusers Inviting Life (SAIL) for men and women struggling from chemical dependency, Co-occurring Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Disorders (COPSD) and a specialized outpatient substance abuse recovery program for pregnant women, as well as those with small children. In addition, STSARS offers Opioid Addiction Recovery Services (OARS), which provides Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in the form of methadone to assist clients during opiate detox and treatment.
Treatment and Staff
At STSARS, the SAIL outpatient program includes co-ed group and individual therapy. The weekly four-hour track is offered from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, and from 6 to 8 pm on Thursdays. Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, an introduction to the 12 steps and substance abuse education. Groups range between 10 and 15 clients per session. Individual therapy is offered on a weekly basis and sessions run between 30 and 60 minutes.
The specialized female program is offered Wednesday mornings and includes two weekly hours of group therapy. Group topics include trauma, parenting, relapse prevention, life skills, 12-step and substance abuse education. Individual therapy and case management services are provided. This program also provides support for women who have lost custody of their children.
The COPSD program offers dual diagnosis support and includes individual therapy and case management services. Sometimes counselors visit the clients’ homes to provide therapy and other social services.
The length of the opioid treatment program varies per client but every individual receives complete assessments and individualized treatment plans. When applicable, clients receive methadone seven days a week. While government and state-funded insurance like Medicaid covers OARS, the private pay intake fee, which includes the first week of dosing, is $140, if the client is seen on a Monday. On Fridays, the intake fee is $85. After that, the weekly fee for private pay clients is $50. Additionally, clients pay $10 a month for random urine screenings. A licensed medical doctor monitors individuals who also receive regular physical exams and lab work. The program also includes individual therapy and two hours of weekly group therapy. Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills and substance abuse education.
In addition to the aforementioned physician, the main location’s staff includes two LCDCs and administrative support.
Extras
Besides its main office in Corpus Christi, STSARS operates another satellite facility in that city, as well as an additional office in Robstown.
In Summary
STSARS offers treatment to clients, regardless of their ability to pay, so this program is a boon for financially challenged men and women, suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders, as well as those in need of MAT.
