The Basics
With locations all throughout the state, Teen Challenge of Southern California is an expansive organization founded in 1963 that provides year-long residential treatment programs for adults and adolescent boys, ages 12 to 17. The programs are structured and cover a range of topics including Christian-based care and vocational services.
Accommodations and Food
Altogether, Teen Challenge of Southern California has facilities in Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego and Ventura counties. While the specific bed counts of each facility may vary, the organization has a total of 530 beds available across its many locations. Throughout their stay, residents share dorm-style rooms with twin bunk beds and bathrooms. Each is equipped with dressers and shared closet space. All locations have an on-site chapel as well as shared living areas, a dining hall and administrative rooms. Throughout their stay, all clients are served three meals a day.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their individualized treatment plans. Teen Challenge of Southern California offers long term residential treatment; however, those in need of detox are referred to an off-site facility.
Because the programs at Teen Challenge are not clinical, they are not rooted in evidence-based practices but rather Christian principles. Residents move through treatment in phases, initially through an induction phase that teaches them basic discipline and spiritual foundations in group and individual therapy. Clients then proceed through the Christian Life School, which typically lasts eight months and focuses on Bible-based teachings, GED classes and life skills. Finally, the Re-entry phase helps residents prepare to find employment and more permanent housing for entering back into society. Residential programs typically last for a year.
Because the program works within its own self-developed curriculum, 12-step participation is also not required.
The staff at Teen Challenge of Southern California largely consists of program alumni, volunteers, life coaches and spiritual counselors though they do not have formal medical or psychiatric accreditations. As a result, dual diagnosis support is also not available.
Extras
Aside from the programs above, the organization provides a wide range of outreach services including after school programs, Christian winter camps for inner city youth, ministry to individuals in juvenile detention, help to homeless individuals on Skid Row and much more.
In Summary
Overall, Teen Challenge of Southern California is an expansive and affordable program which handles addiction and treatment from a purely Christian perspective. Dual diagnosis support and the traditional addiction as disease model are not featured in the curriculum here, though the program does last a year and teaches many life skills. While this may be a niche option only for those truly dedicated to a faithful life, Teen Challenge of Southern California remains a broad and intensive recovery resource.
