The Basics
Founded in Baltimore in 1960 by behavioral scientist Dr. Joseph V. Brady, Institutes for Behavior Resources offers outpatient opioid abuse treatment through its REACH (Recovery Enhanced by Access to Comprehensive Healthcare) division. The services include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for opioid substance abuse that consists of group therapy four days a week and medication assistance. A second program sees participants seven days a week strictly to administer methadone.
Treatment and Staff
REACH services are provided through grants funded by Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems and, as such, are limited to adult opioid-dependent persons residing in the city of Baltimore. Upon intake, each client’s medical history is assessed and a physical examination, blood work and tuberculosis test are performed. Oral, urinalysis and blood-alcohol screenings are used to determine substance-abuse history. Clients must meet DSM-IV criteria for opioid abuse to participate in any program here.
Treatment includes assessment, counseling services, symptom management, pharmacotherapy, case management and referrals to other community services after IOP is completed.
While REACH’s medication-assisted treatment uses methadone as its primary program medication, it also offers buprenorphine to recently-released inmates from the Maryland prison system. Antabuse and naltrexone are available as needed or requested and based on medical and psychiatric consultations.
IOP groups meet 9 am to noon Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and address coping skills, health and wellness, how to deal with compulsive behavior, and drug and alcohol education. Participants also receive individual counseling, case management, psychiatric consultation and aftercare through REACH’s collaboration with local healthcare providers and community service agencies. REACH does not use the 12 steps as part of its program but staff encourage clients to attend outside meetings.
The staff at REACH is made up of substance abuse treatment doctors, Master’s-level public health professionals and LCSWs. Counselors work with no more than 15 participants at a time, for a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-seven.
Extras
Yoga sessions are available to help clients work through trauma related to their substance abuse. REACH also offers HIV and hepatitis C testing on-site, as well as other primary health care for substance-abusing patients and their families, including reproductive, maternal, pediatric and adult services.
In Summary
REACH provides medication assistance and group therapy for opioid dependence. Though methadone use is controversial in the recovery industry, this is an affordable program with additional services that may be of use to those in the Baltimore area.
