The Basics
The Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut offers crisis stabilization through short-term inpatient care, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and outpatient programs to those suffering from co-occurring disorders. The Institute of Living is a leading nonprofit for behavioral, psychiatric and addictive disorders.
Accommodations and Food
Institute of Living keeps residents divided by wing, with one housing 30 higher-functioning individuals, another with 30 clients with chronic symptoms and a third for 24 seniors, adolescents and children. Rooms are two- and four-person occupancy with meals delivered and all are furnished in a clinical fashion with adjustable beds. Dietary restrictions are accommodated and menu items include pizza, pasta, hamburgers, hot dogs and snacks.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Institute of Living begins with a clinical, medical and psychosocial assessment to match residents to an appropriate level of care. Crisis stabilization lengths of stay vary from several days to several weeks. Programs provide individual and group therapy to physically, mentally and emotionally prepare clients for residential treatment or outpatient services. Family meetings and discharge planning are introduced during this initial stage of treatment. Inpatient care is highly structured, with therapy and counseling from morning to evening.
The inpatient program offers 24-hour care with medication management, group therapy, vocational counseling, case management, and family and couples therapy. Networking with community providers for meetings and support after treatment is also available.
Institute of Living’s day treatment programs are PHP or IOP for those with severe mental health issues or co-occurring disorders, and both teach clients to manage their desire to abuse as they share their experiences, peer-model and learn coping skills. These programs meet in groups three to four days a week, Monday through Friday. The PHP program offers groups from 9 am to 1 pm, while IOP runs 9 am to noon.
Each person’s treatment addresses individual needs, integrating CBT, DBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), behavioral rehearsal, psychodynamic therapy, family systems therapy, relapse prevention and interpersonal therapy.
PHP and IOP offer personalized treatment including medication management, group therapy, individual case management, family and couples education and therapy, drug and Breathalyzer screenings, free-time planning, relapse prevention activities, substance abuse and recovery education, and referrals to social services.
Standard outpatient services for substance abuse and mental health issues are the most flexible of all treatment offerings and address depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, bipolar and personality disorders, stress management, relationships, life transitions, psychosis and unemployment. Treatment modalities include individual and group therapy, family therapy, couples therapy and medication management.
Since the institute is part of a large hospital and healthcare network, clients have access to 28 psychiatrists and doctors focusing on addiction, assisted by a clinical staff of registered and advanced-practice nurses, licensed social workers, psychologists, case managers and adult outpatient professional clinicians. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-four.
Extras
Day treatment clients can access inpatient psychiatric hospitalization programs and other on-site services. German, Urdu, Hindi, Spanish, Romanian and Russian language services are all available as well.
In Summary
The Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital offers a very wide range of mental health and substance abuse support in their programs for those who can afford it. Though this facility doesn’t take the holistic approach of some competing high-end programs, it is still a safe bet for those looking for an evidence-based, medical program.
