The Basics
Based in Houston, Texas, the United States Veterans Initiative has been active since 1998 as a nonprofit organization providing outpatient counseling services and substance abuse treatment for US veterans. Treatment is alos tailored for those who are experiencing PTSD and psychological issues, and USVI introduces clients to the 12-step framework to help foster a recovery community. Staff employ traditional therapy and dual diagnosis support.
Treatment and Staff
USVI’s program provides clients with direct clinical and crisis intervention services. To begin, clients meet with a staff therapist for an intake session which determines the level of care required. USVI’s veteran clientele tend to come into the program with chronic mental health conditions, co-occurring disorders or facing chronic homelessness, PTSD and other mental health issues.
USVI’s treatment approach aims to cultivate positive change in behavior, with the goal of helping clients live enriched and healthier lives. Clients partake in individual and group therapy, psycho-education classes and crisis intervention.
Groups are scheduled throughout the week on a variety of topics. Most often, clients begin by attending at least two to three sessions per week, depending on the level of care needed. They also independently schedule one on one sessions, either weekly or bi-weekly. USVI staff includes a Master’s-level therapist, a Master’s-level clinician and a staff counselor.
In Summary
With nearly 20 years of service in the Houston community, the United States Veterans Initiative is well-established and specialized treatment program tailored to the specific needs of its clientele.
