Montpelier VermontThe Basics

Washington County Youth Services Bureau serves children, adolescents and their families throughout the state of Vermont. Headquartered in Montpelier, it operates the Healthy Youth Program, an outpatient substance abuse prevention and treatment program for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 12 and 25.

Youth Services Bureau was established in 1974. Its mission is to provide effective programs that cultivate healthy communication among families and to enrich the lives of youth in an effort to help build responsible citizens and members of their communities.

In addition to substance abuse treatment, YSB runs Return House, a residence for young men leaving incarceration, and a transitional housing program to help homeless youth become self-sufficient. Its core program, Country Roads, provides individual and family counseling, family mediation and emergency shelter.

Treatment and Staff

Due to its young client population and the lack of public transportation in Vermont, the Healthy Youth Program does its best to meet clients where they are, usually by traveling to local schools and community agencies to offer substance abuse prevention and treatment counseling.

Prospective HYP clients first undergo a bio-psychosocial-assessment. They then receive a customized treatment plan likely to include weekly individual and group therapy. The duration of treatment is as-needed, with clients staying in the program anywhere from one month to several years.

The treatment team at HYP includes LADCs and Master’s-level therapists who use the Seven Challenges and Seeking Safety treatment curricula. Since there are relatively few peer support options for teens in the area, the treatment team works with clients to build self-esteem and a support network through facilitating involvement in clubs, jobs or other healthy recreational activities.

HYP’s therapists address co-occurring disorders in therapy, but refer clients in need of dual diagnosis support and medication management to local mental health clinics.

Extras

HYP also works to heal clients’ support systems through family therapy. Each year, Youth Services Bureau hosts a popular Thanksgiving Community Dinner for low-income and home-bound residents of Washington County.

In Summary

Washington County Youth Services Bureau provides outpatient substance abuse treatment as well as a host of transitional and supportive services to children, teens and young adults throughout Vermont. Its Healthy Youth Program creates highly customized outpatient treatment plans that include therapy, recreational and educational activities to build clients’ self-awareness and self-esteem.
