Rockville MarylandThe Basics

Washington Adventist HealthCare is a large multi-disciplinary healthcare provider network headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Founded in 1907, its Behavioral Health department operates a number of psychiatric programs as well as two outpatient programs for substance abuse.

Washington Adventist’s Rockville clinic offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and its Takoma Park location has a standard outpatient program that focuses on the treatment of co-occurring disorders. Both programs have been in operation for over ten years and incorporate the 12-step framework as well as evidence based treatment modalities.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients are enrolled in either the standard outpatient or IOP track. The Rockville IOP meets for group therapy Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm. Most IOP clients complete their treatment plan in 12 weeks. Standard outpatient clients meet for group therapy on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6 to 9 pm for eight weeks total. Clients in the standard outpatient track who need additional dual diagnosis support are referred to mental health therapists at the Takoma Park location.

Clients in the IOP may step down to standard outpatient, and clients in both programs have an individual session with their primary counselor every two weeks to review their treatment plan and recovery goals. Counselors also work with clients to create aftercare plans and provide case-management services to help access additional community programs.

The treatment team includes LCSWs, LADCs, CAC-ADs and psychiatrists and nurse practitioners for dual diagnosis support. Treatment groups use CBT, DBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and the Living in Balance curriculum. Washington Adventist also requires clients to attend at least 10 12-step meetings during their treatment plan and in order to complete treatment they must acquire a temporary sponsor and maintain at least 30 days of sobriety.

Extras

Washington Adventist also has a specialist who treats gambling addiction. The Rockville IOP hosts a family support group every Tuesday.

The treatment team calls each client quarterly for a year after their discharge to provide support and to see how they’re implementing their aftercare plan.

In Summary

Washington Adventist HealthCare’s outpatient programs provide structured evidence-based treatment as well as support for working the 12 steps. With comprehensive dual-diagnosis support, family support groups and aftercare follow-up, Washington Adventist has the ability to combat the mental health issues and isolation that make so many vulnerable to addiction.
