British Columbia CanadaThe Basics

Adult and Teen Challenge BC is a member of the world-wide Teen Challenge treatment network, with substance abuse facilities in over 100 countries. The residential program is a 12-month Christian discipleship. While non-Christians are welcome at Adult and Teen Challenge BC, all residents are required to attend chapel and participate in extensive bible study and other Christian-oriented treatment activities.

Teen Challenge, as it was known when it opened in 1958, was founded by Reverend David Wilkerson, author of The Cross and The Switchblade, a best-seller based on his five years administering to at-risk youth in New York City. Teen Challenge arrived in Vancouver in 1965 and was re-branded as Adult and Teen Challenge BC in 2000.

Adult and Teen Challenge BC operates three residences in British Columbia for men and women aged 19 and up. Its Chilliwack and Okanagan residences serve men, and its Abbotsford residence is for women. All three residences have been in operation for 10 years or more.

Accommodations and Food

Clients are accommodated in modern homes in suburban areas. Residents usually have two or three roommates and rotate chore assignments each month. The kitchens are overseen by a kitchen manager, and residents help prepare meals as part of their chore assignments.

Each home has a small gym and recreation room. TV time is very limited, but the residences have movie nights at least once a week. Smoking is not permitted at Teen Challenge. Residents cannot have cell phones, but they may use the house phones to call home. In their first six months of treatment, clients can call home twice a week, then in their final six months of treatment they can call home three times a week.

Treatment and Staff

Clients in need of detox must first do so at a hospital or detox facility. Once they arrive at a Teen Challenge residence, they have an assessment which determines a customized treatment plan that includes individual and group therapy. In addition, clients have comprehensive bible study and Christian-oriented peer support meetings, similar to AA/NA. They must also attend chapel regularly.

Treatment is divided into two six-month phases. In Phase One, residents attend groups and individual sessions that emphasize character development, relational skills and healthy recreation. In Phase Two, they focus on academic work and/or vocational readiness. In this phase, residents are also guided in developing a strong sense of responsibility to themselves and their community. Additionally, clients may leave the home for two to five days of work each week at a local business or volunteering opportunity to develop job skills and readiness for living outside the treatment facility.

Each residence has on-site program managers, educators, life skills trainers and clinical counselors. Counselors use CBT and other evidence-based modalities to help clients learn anger management, social skills and relapse prevention. While co-occurring disorders may be addressed in counseling, Teen Challenge is not equipped to provide on-going or intensive dual diagnosis support.

Extras

Family visitors are welcome the first Saturday of each month from 12 to 6 pm. Teen Challenge is also currently developing a family program component to treatment.

In Summary

Adult and Teen Challenge BC has been providing men and women with several long-term residential treatment programs for the last decade. For a program that is primarily a Christian discipleship, treatment has a strong educational component and evidence based therapy that integrates bible study and worship practices as well as classes and lectures on developing character according to Christian principles. Each resident leaves treatment having had significant work experience and/or achieving meaningful educational goals.
