The Basics
Valley House is a transitional care facility and a member of the Kinghaven Treatment Centre network in British Columbia, Canada. Kinghaven was founded in 1971 as a recovery house for men and has since grown into a modern campus that also houses The George Schmidt Centre, a sober living facility.
Valley House residents can stay anywhere from 30 days up to one year. The program is designed to accommodate clients with barriers to treatment—such as cognitive or physical health challenges—that make it difficult to participate in an intensive recovery program, such as the Treatment Centre’s flagship Kinghaven program.
Accommodations and Food
Valley House occupies a unit of Kinghaven’s facility, a modern treatment environment with a fully staffed industrial kitchen that serves all meals and snacks. The facility décor is bright and tasteful, giving it an up-scale and optimistic atmosphere. Men have roommates, and the facility has a weight room, basketball and badminton court. There’s also a workout area and television room that hosts movie nights. The grounds have ample space for running and hiking. Cell phone and computers are not permitted, but the facility does have designated smoking patios.
Rules and Regulations
If clients are in need of detox, they can do so at Fraser Health’s nearby Riverstone Detoxification Program. Once enrolled for treatment at Valley House, clients have a 30-day stabilization period during which they must stay on campus. After, they can leave the facility for two to six hours with a support person from Valley House.
Treatment plans are a highly customized combination of group and individual therapy. Many clients have been diagnosed with co-occurring disorders, and may be unable to tolerate the intensity of group therapy. Instead, their primary counselor meets with them individually each day.
Therapy incorporates CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), and clients able to tolerate groups may sometimes attend them at the main Kinghaven facility, which follows the Harm Reduction Model.
In the evenings, clients are encouraged to attend on-site AA meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is also a weekly SMART Recovery meeting, meditation classes, self-awareness classes and Aboriginal activities classes such as drumming.
The treatment team at Valley House includes Clinical Counselors—such as CACs, and peer support workers. A medical doctor consults with clients on Thursdays, and a psychiatrist consults with clients on Wednesdays. There’s also a pharmacist who supplies methadone for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).
Extras
Every other Friday, the Valley House staff takes clients on shopping excursions in town.
In their final phase of treatment, clients work with counselors to create aftercare plans that may include placement into the Kinghaven program, the George Schmidt Centre or other second stage housing. Family can visit weekend afternoons, and several times a year Kinghaven hosts a Family Day of workshops and support groups for clients’ loved ones.
In Summary
Kinghaven Treatment Centre’s Valley House’s holistic transitional-care program provides comprehensive therapeutic support and education for men not yet able to tolerate intensive addiction treatment. Men learn coping skills and stabilize their physical health under the supervision of a committed staff. Valley House’s flexible time-frame allows men to enter residential treatment or continue on to outpatient or second stage care as soon as they’re ready to take their next steps.
