The Basics
Founded in 1958 in Beaumont, Texas, the non-profit South East Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, most commonly referred to as SETCADA, provides interventions, outpatient and inpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment for men, women and adolescents suffering from chemical dependency. Its Unity Treatment Center offers primary care for men, ages 18 and older. Besides the main facility in Beaumont, it also has its Right Choice outpatient programs in Orange and Port Arthur.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment and create individualized treatment plans with their intake counselor. Since SETCADA does not offer detox, clients must be clean and sober when they begin the 90-day program.
At Right Choice, clinical, evidence-based practices, along with a 12-step approach, are employed. It also uses the Texas Christian University/National Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies (DATOS) model, which focuses on developing a strong therapeutic bond between client and counselor. The model also emphasizes working on rational skills with the belief that many addicts in early recovery have a hard time making decisions, as well as planning day-to-day activities.
The Right Choice Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) includes no more than 14-and-a-half weekly hours of combined group and individual therapy. Clients are typically assigned weekly tracks that align with their treatment plans; with individual therapy commencing usually once a week. The co-ed group sessions are from 9 to 11:30 am on Mondays, with evening groups from 6 to 9:30 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Group topics include relapse prevention, 12 steps, motivational counseling, life skills, decision-making, trauma and substance abuse education. During therapy, clients process emotions; which include developing an awareness of the emotion, pinpointing the feeling, attributing or making sense of the feeling, evaluating the emotion and finally deciding how to deal with the feeling as opposed to numbing it with chemical substances. Clients are assigned homework so they can absorb the information they learn during group. While numbers vary, there can be up to 35 clients per group.
While this program cannot facilitate full medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders, some dual diagnosis support is provided during therapy.
Each location includes two LCDCs, three licensed therapists and two counseling interns.
Extras
SETCADA’s community outreach program provides substance abuse education for college students and the general community. The program focuses on preventing alcohol, marijuana and/or prescription drug abuse.
In Summary
SETCADA’s Right Choice outpatient program offers structured treatment for financially challenged clients. Group and individual therapy, as well as a thorough introduction to the 12-step recovery process while still maintaining professional and personal obligations, make this network a vital asset to those who are ready to start building a working foundation in sobriety.
