The Basics
Tarzana Treatment Center began as a large inpatient program for men and women in its namesake of Tarzana, California. It now offers treatment in multiple locations across southern California, including safe and supportive residential care for pregnant or postpartum women in Long Beach. It’s open to individuals who are suffering from substance abuse as well as co-occurring disorders. In addition to individual and group therapy, medication management and an introduction to the 12 steps, this program focuses on women-specific issues and aims to help its clients find empowerment in recovery.
Accommodations and Food
The residence is an apartment-style building in a family-friendly neighborhood in Long Beach. The location is close to parks, schools, grocery stores and shops. The facility offers accommodations for clients and their small children, which is limited to two, pre-school age or younger. Rooms are shared with another resident and both are expected to all pitch in to maintain the cleanliness of common areas. There is a child care unit on-site that clients work in while in treatment.
Meals are provided by the facility and offer healthy options daily. There is also a canteen for snacks throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
Clients are on a phase system that begins in an orientation phase, which restricts phone calls, TV time or visitation. Each phase lessens in intensity as clients successfully move through their individualized treatment plans. Lengths of stay vary depending on each woman’s circumstances.
Treatment is based on the 12-step philosophy and offers daily AA or NA meetings along with group sessions and once a week individual therapy. There are psychoeducational lectures and classes, relapse prevention groups, process groups and anger management. Additionally, this facility addresses gender-specific issues such as domestic violence or sexual abuse. Programming also implements trauma- informed care and CBT. During their time in treatment, clients work closely with their primary counselor to design an aftercare treatment plan.
As previously mentioned, with a dual diagnosis can receive medication management. There are also options for clients looking to get clean from an opioids, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) through methadone or Vivitrol. Detox is not available at this facility.
The large, multidisciplinary team of addiction specialists at Tarzana Treatment Center includes physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs and MFTs.
Extras
Additional services include domestic violence counseling programs along with classes and emergency shelter resources. HIV education is included in treatment. Tarzana’s family program is a weekly session of education and counseling for loved ones of women in treatment.
In Summary
The unique women and children’s program at Tarzana Treatment Center provides a safe environment for women who have struggled with addiction and other related issues. It provides them with hands-on parenting classes and allows them to keep the bond with their children while learning how to stay sober. The organization at large is an invaluable asset to the recovery community of southern California.
