The Basics
Gabriel Ramirez founded Gabriel’s House in 2005 in Yucca Valley, a town located 30 miles north of Palm Springs in California’s Mojave Desert. While most sober living houses believe that a roommate situation eliminates feelings of isolation, Ramirez believes that clients in recovery need space for proper healing, and he provides both male and female clients single rooms at a very affordable price. Gabriel’s House is nicknamed, “the poor man’s Betty Ford,” due to it having an additional detox house at an undisclosed location. Medical personnel monitor detox clients around the clock.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Yucca Valley house is a ranch-style single-family six-bedroom house with a picturesque desert garden landscape. The garden features native plants and trees indigenous to the Mojave, including Joshua Trees and cacti. The house has a seven-bed capacity, each single room includes a twin bed, a dresser, storage space and hanging artwork. Amenities include free washer and dryer use, Cable TV, Wi-Fi, local, a post office box, and long distance phone service.
The living room has contemporary-style furnishings, a rustic den stocked with books, and a fully equipped kitchen with an attached dining room. The house has three refrigerators, and each client receives usage of half a refrigerator, as well as a kitchen cabinet. The residents are responsible for their own groceries, and prepare their own meals.
The detox house has between two and three clients. Food is prepared in collaboration with a dietician, but meals include high protein drinks made from a powdered mix. The seven-day cost for detox is $2,000.
Rules and Regulations
Residents must be clean and sober prior to admittance. Preferably, they are involved in a 12-step program and are working with a sponsor. Requirements include attending AA/NA meetings, working with a sponsor, being at in-house meetings, performing household chores, searching for work and going to outpatient therapy (if appropriate). Clients must maintain a certain level of activity relevant to their recovery. Those who sleep all day are immediately evicted. Additionally, clients are subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Should they test positive, those are also grounds for immediate dismissal.
Ramirez, who is a Master’s-level behavioral health specialist maintains close ties with local substance abuse treatment centers in Yucca Valley including Pacific Clinics, thus providing referrals to clients when appropriate.
Extras
Gabriel’s House also offers college students sober housing in San Bernardino. While the students are not necessarily required to be in recovery, the housing provides a safe and sober environment.
Veterans are also offered family-style lodging in a residence in Palm Springs through Gabriel’s House.
In Summary
For clients in recovery seeking affordable sober living in the Mojave Desert, Gabriel’s House is an oasis. While this may not be great fit for those who are looking for a gender-specific environment, single rooms offer plenty of privacy. The house is in the midst of many natural wonders, including the Joshua Tree National Park. Additionally, Gabriel’s House is a member of the San Bernardino Sober Living Coalition, an organization that closely monitors the activities of its members, making sure that they maintain impeccable standards.
