AKUA Treatment ProgramsThe Basics

AKUA Mind & Body offers detox, residential treatment and Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) for addiction recovery in three locations in Orange County, California. Founded in 2014 by Dr. Evan Miller and Kenny Dewan, AKUA Mind & Body is accredited and licensed by various agencies including the Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare. Its residential program for adults is located in Costa Mesa.

Accommodations and Food

AKUA’s residential program is separated in two gender-specific residences. The women’s facility known as “LANI” can accommodate up to 12 clients. “KOA,” the men’s facility, can accept up to 18 clients. Each is a home-style residence with well-appointed, upscale decor and fixtures. Bedrooms and bathrooms are each shared by two clients. The residences have a living room, kitchen, Ping-Pong table, pool, hot tub and outside recreational space.

Living rooms in both residences have a TV with cable and Netflix. TV viewing is permitted at the end of the day. There is no Internet or access to a computer and cell phones and personal electronic devices are not permitted. Clients may use the residence’s phone at certain hours. Visitation is permitted on a case-by-case basis and considered after a family therapy session.

Meals are designed by a dietician and prepared by a private chef and served buffet style. Though sugar and caffeine are allowed, AKUA prioritizes brain healthy food and each client works with a nutritionist while in treatment.

Treatment and Staff

The residential treatment program is 30 days and centers around a psychodynamic approach and includes CBT, DBT, EMDR, as well as 12-step recovery. Holistic and alternative therapies, including art and music therapy, Reiki, acupuncture, yoga and meditation, are also regularly implemented. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is also available if needed, as is dual diagnosis support.

Wake up is 7:30 am and the clients’ daily schedule includes meditation, individual and group sessions, art therapy, yoga, exercise and personal time. Residential clients receive individual therapy once a week and can attend up to six group sessions a day. AKUA believes clients feel safer and less distracted in a gender-specific environment and therefore only offers gender-specific group sessions. Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, health education and trauma.

Staff includes psychiatrists, LMFTs, LPCCs, LCSWs, LPNs, CADCs, certified case managers and registered clinical support staff. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-one.

Extras

AKUA takes advantage of the southern California climates and plans outside excursions during the weekends like sailing, kayaking, hiking and beach volleyball. Clients also attend movie nights and sporting events. AKUA’s aftercare includes a robust alumni program that meets for a weekly group session and a monthly activity.

In Summary

AKUA Mind & Body is a luxury resort-style facility that offers a full range of programs. Its 30-day residential track values a balanced approach of clinical and holistic treatment. Clients who live an active lifestyle will enjoy AKUA’s extensive exercise opportunities and outside recreational activities. The thoughtful approach to gender-specific living and group therapy is an example of AKUA’s attention to detail to its level of care and amenities.
