The Basics
Aviary Recovery Center is a holistically-minded Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Fenton, Missouri. Its services are for individuals struggling with both chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. In addition to addiction treatment and dual diagnosis support, it encourages healthy nutrition, exercise and a spiritual viewpoint. Fenton is a suburb of St. Louis, which has gained the reputation of being a “recovery” city, boasting approximately 1000 12-step meetings a week.
Treatment and Staff
While the Aviary Recovery Center does not provide detox, referrals can be provided. Clients must be clean and sober before they are admitted, at which point, they undergo comprehensive assessments and receive individualized treatment plans. Treatment length is between 25 and 35 days.
Aviary Recovery Center utilizes evidence-based practices, specifically CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The weekly IOP track includes nine hours of group therapy. Individual therapy is scheduled as needed. Groups are held from 9 am to noon— Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays—and from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Clients have the freedom to create their own schedule however the Monday morning group is for women only. Groups range between 15 and 17 clients.
Group topics include relapse prevention, medication use, intimacy issues, communication skills, behavioral insights, support systems, healthy relationships, life skills and substance addiction and the brain. During the support systems group, clients learn about 12-step, SMART Recovery and other peer-based recovery support networks. Clients are encouraged to try different meetings until they find a group that best suits their needs and comfort level.
As previously mentioned, dual diagnosis support is provided and appropriate clients are referred to a psychiatrist for an evaluation and medication management.
Staff includes a full time Master’s-level addiction counselor, a full time Doctorate-level counselor, three part time licensed therapists and interns.
Extras
The family program is eight weeks in length and offered on a rotating basis, so individuals can join any time they wish. It focuses on self-care, building empathy, family dynamics, healthy boundaries, conflict resolution and prioritization and the disease of addiction.
Aftercare varies per client but typically includes one weekly group session and individual therapy.
Aviary Recovery Center plans to open a residential treatment facility in the near future.
