The Basics
In 1995, The Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Florida created the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center to provide substance abuse treatment to pregnant women and women with children in south Florida. The Center offers a six-month residential treatment program in Pembroke Pines, a large city near Miami. While in treatment, women can reside with their young children on the facility’s main campus. The Center also has an outpatient program in nearby Miramar for those requiring a less intensive treatment track.
The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center’s goal is to remove obstacles that women face as they enter treatment for addiction, and to support their efforts to keep their families united. Since opening its doors in 1995, the Susan B. Anthony Center has helped reunite over 850 families.
Accommodations and Food
The residential program is situated on a scenic five-acre campus that can house up to 60 families at a time. Clients without children may share two bedroom apartments, and clients with children are accommodated in single family apartments. All living quarters are furnished and have living and dining areas and full kitchens.
Women are responsible for their own cooking and cleaning. After 60 days of treatment they can leave the facility independently for shopping; before then, they’ll be transported to a grocery store for supervised shopping trips.
Women can bring up to three children into treatment with them, all of whom must be aged 10 or younger. School-aged children attend the local public school, while infants and toddlers attend an on-site daycare center during treatment hours.
Treatment and Staff
Upon arriving at the facility, clients have a full bio-psycho-social assessment. They then receive a customized treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy, 12-step meetings and eventually education and job skills training.
The Center prides itself on a holistic treatment model that addresses physical, mental and spiritual aspects of recovery. Its highly-trained treatment team is made up of Master’s-level therapists, physicians and psychiatric nurse practitioners who can provide dual diagnosis support. Therapy uses CBT, Seeking Safety and the 12-step framework, and clients attend several 12-step meetings both on- and off-site each week.
Once clients are ready to start working (usually 60 to 90 days into their treatment plan), they are required to put 30% of their income into a savings account. This money can then be used to help secure housing as they near the end of their six-month stay.
Children are also enrolled in a treatment plan. They’re given a developmental assessment at the beginning of their stay and then may be assigned individual and group therapy. They may also have play therapy and participate in parenting skills workshops with their mothers.
Extras
Throughout their stay, clients work with case managers to develop budgeting skills and job and educational goals. Case managers can also coordinate additional treatment such as medical care. As women end their treatment plan, their counselors work with them to create a six-month aftercare plan that may include individual and group therapy.
In Summary
The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center has been helping pregnant women and women with children battle addiction since 1995. Its residential treatment program, Pembroke Pines, provides an all-encompassing six-month treatment plan that includes therapy, addiction education, life skills and treatment for children. The Center is one of south Florida’s only residential facilities dedicated to helping mothers keep their families intact while undergoing comprehensive substance abuse treatment.
