The Basics
In 1990, the Support Systems Homes, Inc. Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center started operating out of San Jose, California, providing a variety of substance abuse treatment options in the Silicon Valley. With a continuum of care that includes detox, residential and day treatment as well as a general outpatient track and a sober living facility, SSH incorporates the 12-step framework as well as evidence-based treatment using CBT in its treatment approach.
Accommodations and Food
SSH’s residential clients are accommodated in a co-ed home with clients separated into gender-specific wings. All living quarters are shared, with two to four residents in each room. Rooms are furnished with one or two sets of bunk beds. SSH provides three healthy, nutrition-focused meals per day, which are prepared for them by facility staff and included in the cost of stay.
Treatment and Staff
Clients who begin their treatment with detox stay three to seven days in the detox unit and are monitored by staff 24 hours a day. Detox clients are also assigned a primary counselor who helps determine the best course of treatment and are encouraged to participate in educational groups and counseling.
The typical SSH residential stay is a minimum of 30 days. Clients attend group therapy and educational lectures from 8 am to 8 pm on a range of topics, and on-site AA/NA meetings are scheduled nightly. Clients work on life skills and homework assignments during their downtime. Individual counseling is available while clients also work on relapse prevention and transition and discharge planning. Treatment schedules are individualized and treatment planning is goal-oriented. Residents also participate in SSH’s family program.
Day treatment clients follow similar schedules as residential clients but return home at the end of a full treatment day. The outpatient track offers two-hour groups three times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays—one from 2 to 4 pm and one from 6 to 8 pm. Outpatient clients get an introduction to the 12-steps, recovery principles and self-help. Staff includes registered nurses, Licensed Substance Abuse Counselors (LSACs), clinical supervisory personnel and a physician.
Extras
Clients may do yoga twice a week and have access to an exercise room. SHH also offers referrals to outside psychiatrists, medical doctors and employment services for those who require medication management.
SSH offers free family support programs and alumni activities post-graduation. Clients at any of SSH’s programs get dual diagnosis support, drug screenings, access to SSH’s free lifetime aftercare and recovery planning,
In Summary
Only three years away from its 30th anniversary, Support Systems Homes, Inc. serves the San Jose community with detox, residential, outpatient and sober living recovery options for those struggling with substance abuse. By participating in traditional therapy with a range of group topics as well as the 12-steps, clients develop a solid foundation of recovery that is supported through aftercare. For those seeking an affordable recovery option that covers all the bases, SSH is a good place to start.
