Los Angeles CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in Los Angeles, California in 1974, United American Indian Involvement is a specialized treatment program that aims to provide mental health, substance abuse and social services that are tailored to meet the unique cultural aspects of American Indians and Alaska Natives in Los Angeles County. Substance abuse treatment services at UAII are available at a general outpatient level through an internal department named The Robert Sundance Family Wellness Center. UAII provides native clients with treatment rooted in the tradition of their people, supported by traditional therapy using CBT and an introduction to the 12-step approach.

Treatment and Staff

Clients are given a completely individualized treatment plan which combines individual and group therapy with referrals to residential and inpatient treatment options given as necessary. Clients also participate in traditional native healing practices including Talking Circles, Sweat Lodge sessions, Pow Wow ceremonies and working the White Bison Wellbriety framework.

To begin treatment, a prospective client must arrange for their intake, screening and assessment appointment over the phone. Through this process a counselor determines type and level of treatment required. In order to be accepted into the program, clients must provide proof of Tribal enrollment (or be eligible for enrollment) in a federally or state of California recognized tribe along with California residence. AA/NA meetings are scheduled on Friday evenings and group sessions are scheduled on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Clients participate in Traditional Treatment on Thursdays, and individual sessions may be scheduled Monday through Friday between 9 am and 5 pm.

UAII also has a program for adolescents—Walking In a New Direction (WIND)—a youth and early intervention program available to American Indian and Alaskan Native adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 who live in LA County. The program offers screenings and assessments for substance abuse and depression, intervention and treatment. It also has an aftercare component and offers group activities, educational workshops covering youth topics and field trips. Additionally, UAII offers Workforce Development Services.

Staff at UAII consists of a number of licensed substance abuse counselors.

Extras

While in treatment at UAII, clients are given comprehensive case management, have access to public health nursing and may undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Additionally, an alumni aftercare group is also available that connects current and recent clients with former graduates of the program who are successfully living a sober lifestyle.

In Summary

An established organization for over 40 years, United American Indian Involvement gives the California Native American community access to culture-specific substance abuse treatment. Treatment combines therapy using evidence-based methods with traditional native customs, as well as the 12 steps and White Bison frameworks. Funded through the Indian Health Service, the program is free, making treatment accessible to all who qualify.
