The Basics
Stepping Stone of San Diego is a residential treatment facility that’s provided individualized and holistic care, primarily for the LGBTQ community, since 1976. Programming addresses addiction and co-occurring disorders through evidence-based practices, the 12 steps, relapse prevention and psychoeducation.
Accommodations and Food
The brightly colored, multi-level residential facility can accommodate up to 30 clients in shared, dorm-style bedrooms and bathrooms. The building’s residential section offers comfortable and spacious quarters with two living rooms complete with plush couches and stone fireplaces. The residence also features a large dining room and kitchen as well as gardens and a wrap around deck. The grounds also have offices and meetings rooms that surround a courtyard filled with flowers, picnic tables and benches.
At the beginning of treatment clients aren’t permitted to bring personal devices such as cell phones or laptops, but as they progress those privileges are earned back.
All food is provided but the staff and clients trade off kitchen and cooking duties, preparing breakfast and lunch daily. Dinner is always made and served by kitchen staff that includes a house chef.
Treatment and Staff
The six-month program at Stepping Stone is broken into phases. The first is the Orientation stage, which lasts about six weeks. This phase gets the clients acquainted with the daily schedule and the pace of the program. A part of this stage requires that clients refrain from getting visitors or calls in order to acclimate comfortably.
The Stabilization phase addresses past behaviors and begins to examine how to create a healthier environment and lifestyle for the individual.
The final two stages, Supported Recovery and Extended Recovery, begin the process of having the client transition back into their communities. During these phases, clients lessen their time in therapy and begin to seek out employment or enroll in school.
Each phase involves group and individual therapy, house meetings and daily attendance at AA/NA meetings. Every client is assigned a personal counselor who meets with him or her weekly. Therapeutic methods include CBT, trauma-informed care and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Relapse prevention techniques usually focus on identifying triggers. Additionally, there are extensive classes on sexual health, HIV prevention and personal safety.
The staff of Stepping Stone is comprised of Master’s-level therapists, psychiatrists, LCSWs and clinicians who specialize in HIV education.
Extras
There are weekly movie nights and outings with the program alumni, along with trips to plays, museums and the beach. Residents also throw fundraisers and other awareness events around the city of San Diego that benefit the clients and community. Additionally, the facility holds weekly recognition meetings within the residence acknowledging those who have made strides while in treatment.
There is a weekly, education-based family program that provides referrals to support groups like Alanon. There is also an extended aftercare program that includes weekly alumni meetings and phone check in’s after graduation.
In Summary
Stepping Stone of San Diego’s motto is “helping people get their lives back”, which is exactly what it has done for so many members of the LGBTQ community. By providing the proper tools to maintain sobriety along with extensive support through both evidence-based treatment and 12-step, this is a program that truly cares about its clients.
